The main suspect in Mukuru's murder, Collins Jumaisi, reportedly escaped from Gigiri police station along with 12 Eritrean citizens on Tuesday, August 20.
The Eritrean suspects were arrested for illegal immigration into the country.
How did Jumaisi escape from the hands of the police?
Jumaisi and his colleagues are said to have bravely escaped after cutting the wire mesh outside the cell.
According to the Citizen report, the wire mesh used as their escape route is about 3-4m from the ground.
It is said that the 13 escaped suspects climbed onto the roof to enter the back of the station and then escaped through the courtyard towards Limuru Road.
When Jumaisi and his colleagues escaped from custody, a total of 17 suspects were being held at the police station. Police officers questioned the four who did not escape.
What did Acting IG Gilbert Masengeli say?
Acting Inspector General of Police Gilbert Masengeli noted that preliminary investigations showed that the incident was a domestic conspiracy.
He seemed to insinuate that the police officers on duty deliberately volunteered to help the suspects, including Jumaisi, escape from custody.
Following this, eight police officers including the OCS of Gigiri and the sub-county police commander were arrested
Gigiri police station has also been declared a crime scene, and investigations are underway.
Why was Collins Jumaisi detained?
This is happening following the decision of the court to allow it DCI to detain Jumaisi for 30 more days after appearing in court on Tuesday, July 16.
The DCI argued that the extra time would enable them to find witnesses and victims' families.
The organization also said that since the victims were scattered across the country, they will also need time to take DNA samples and the identification parade.
