On Wednesday, August 21, dailies reported various topics, the escape of 13 prisoners from the cells of Gigiri Police Station was discussed in many pages.
Elsewhere, the embattled governor of Meru, Kawira Mwangaza has been removed from office after the Senate, in its session, voted in favor of the motion to remove him from office.
1. Daily Nation
The daily investigated a case where 13 suspects detained in a cell at the Gigiri Police Station escaped on Tuesday, August 21.
Kenyans were shocked when they heard about the 'escape of the suspects', with Collins Jumaisi being among those who escaped.
Others who escaped were 12 Eritrean citizens who were arrested for being in the country Kenya against the law.
Jumaisi is the main suspect in the Kware street murder, Nairobi.
Daily Nation, in its independent investigation, revealed that the suspect of extrajudicial killing used the supposed dispute between the officers to escape.
According to the newspaper, the Eritrean citizens paid for their freedom, but other officials found out that they were not replaced, hence their move to release Jumaisi with the intention of provoking public anger.
The newspaper said some insiders believed that about the events that led to the unexpected escape.
Daily Nation informants disputed the belief that Jumaisi escaped at dawn with 12 Eritreans before being counted; they were quoted as saying that Jumaisi was there for a while and even had breakfast before being helped.
“The guy wanted over Kware murders ate breakfast here (Gigiri Police Station) this morning,” a source told the Daily Nation newspaper.
2. People Daily
This newspaper also kept a page documenting the escape of Jumaisi and 12 other fugitives from the cells of the Gigiri Police Station.
However, the focus was on Jumaisi, who was being detained after confessing to killing 42 people and dumping their bodies in an abandoned quarry in Kware, Nairobi.
It is said that they cut the wire mesh that was part of the cell's protection and climbed the perimeter wall to escape.
Acting Inspector General of Police Gilbert Masengeli said preliminary investigations showed that the cell outbreak was an inside job.
The police chief announced the suspension of eight officers, including the OCS of Gigiri and the sub-county police commander; they were all arrested while the incident was being investigated.
Masengeli said the officers are looking for the suspects, while asking the Kenyan public to provide information that will enable the suspects to be found again.
3. The Star
The newspaper The Star reported a fatal road accident on August 20 in Migaa area, where 13 people were killed.
A Coast Bus passenger bus was involved in the fatal accident on the Eldoret-Nairobi Highway.
The bus was on its way to Mombasa Kakamega.
