ODM insists Raila Odinga is still the boss of Azimio, warns leaders who despise him: “We will not accept”

Nairobi – The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party has rejected the plans of the parties Declaration of Unity to replace Raila Odinga as the leader of the opposition coalition.

In a press conference on Monday, August 19, ODM chairwoman Gladys Wanga criticized Azimio leaders questioning their commitment to Raila to the opposition.

Wanga said it is bad intention for Azimio leaders to hide behind the recent appointment of ODM officials to the Cabinet to undermine the former prime minister.

“Interviewing ODM and commitment to Raila Odinga to the Opposition, our partners are not acting in good faith. They hide behind the four gentlemen and use it to try to fight the leadership of the parliaments from ODM,” Wanga said.

According to Wanga, some Azimio leaders were trying to turn Raila into endorsing them before the 2027 elections.

Why will ODM continue to hold positions in Parliament

Wanga criticized some of the leaders, accusing them of failing to deal with the internal affairs of the party.

“We will not accept any attempt to continue using Raila Odinga as a shield, any attempt to continue pressuring him to endorse anyone at this stage, or any attempt to continue using him as an excuse for the failure of the leadership in the Azimio constituency,” he added.

Wanga emphasized that ODM will continue to play its role of opposition and include the main parliamentary committees.

The ODM chairman stressed that the party will continue to hold the main positions of minority leaders in Parliament, due to its majority.

“We find that unacceptable and we want to emphasize clearly that the leadership of the Parliament is about the number in the parliament and not those of the government. As we speak, ODM has the largest number of parliamentarians who demand and commit to follow the values ​​and principles of the Declaration,” he said.

Are the Azimio leaders planning to expel Raila?

ODM's statement comes a day after Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka said Raila cannot continue as the leader of the Umoja One Kenya Coalition.

Kalonzo said the recent agreement between Raila and the President William Ruto they make him unable to continue leading the opposition.

The former vice president said the leadership council of the Unity Declaration will meet to decide the leadership of the minority in Parliament.
