Just a few days after the High Court upheld an impeachment against former Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza, her husband, Murega Baichu, has come out to detail that she faced so much turbulence while in the President Ruto-led party.

Speaking during an interview at their TV station, Baite TV, on Sunday, March 16, 2025, Baichu spoke at length about why he believed that the impeachment had been orchestrated by powerful people from the party and stated that he and his wife were now done with it.

According to him, Kawira had never fully joined the party, but after how it turned against her and failed to stand by her, she sees no reason to pursue full membership any longer.

‘Yes, we respect the President, wetu ni wa UDA na tunamheshimu. We don’t have any other president. That is why tumekuwa tukitembea tukitangaza mambo mazuri yake. Hata nimeimba nyimbo about mipango ya SHA. But this other side chama cha UDA ndicho kimekuwa kikiongoza kuweka mijadala ya kumtimua Kawira Mwangaza. That is why we have decided that we have resigned from the UDA party.’

Betrayal

Baichu then went ahead to express his frustration, accusing UDA of betrayal. He said he could not fathom how the very party they had actively promoted was the one spearheading Kawira’s impeachment.

He recalled that in the days leading up to her removal, he had even composed songs praising UDA and the government’s projects, only for the party to turn against them.

He also shared that Cleophas Malala had been ousted from his position as UDA’s Secretary-General after he wrote a letter stopping MCAs from moving ahead with their impeachment motions, saying everything had been well orchestrated.

‘Cleophas Malala wrote a letter to Meru County Assembly and also wrote a letter to nominated MCA ZK na that time SG akakanusha hiyo mambo ya kuendelea na impeachment kama msimamo wa chama. That is the only time we saw UDA kikitangaza msimamo. We don’t know whether it’s about that letter, but after he wrote the letter from UDA headquarters, he did not survive the next two weeks. He was thrown out of the party leadership. The fact is baada ya yeye kuandika hiyo barua alikuwa meshagongwa nje. Lakini mbona sasa UDA watusaliti?’

Next move

Baichu then insisted that Kawira’s impeachment would not deter them and announced that they were planning to unveil a new political party of their own, with Kawira as its leader.

He noted that they had learnt their lesson about affiliating themselves with parties that were not bothered about them and added that they had also learnt that running as an independent candidate is also not good.

According to him, once the party is unveiled, it will shake the whole political landscape because, despite the fact that it has not been unveiled yet, it has already amassed membership in over 35 counties across the country.

‘That is why we have decided kuomba tena kiti cha governor kama independent na tutakuwa na chama chetu. We have already completed the plans; na chama iko is already registered. Iko na membership kwa over 35 counties now, and we have not launched it yet. Within one week, she will announce that she has decided to be a party leader wa hiyo chama and she will say more.’
