Rainy days ahead: Weatherman warns Kenyans of upcoming showers

The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a weather advisory, urging Kenyans to prepare for rainfall across several regions of the country in the coming days starting from March 16, 2025.

According to the latest forecast, released on Sunday, March 16, 2025, the rains are expected to affect areas including Western Kenya, Rift Valley, Central Highlands (including Nairobi), the Lake Victoria Basin, parts of the South-Eastern Lowlands, and several regions along the Coast, North-Eastern, and North-Western Kenya,

“From Sunday, 16 March 2025 – Rains Incoming! Rainfall is expected over several regions, including Western Kenya, Rift Valley, Central Highlands, including Nairobi, Lake Victoria Basin, Parts of the South-Eastern Lowland, Parts of the Coast, North-Eastern, and North-Western Kenya,” the weatherman stated.

In the advisory, the weatherman also predicted that isolated storms and heavy rainfall events may occur in some areas, signalling the potential onset of the rainy season in various parts of the country.

The weatherman cautioned that the weather patterns may evolve, and additional updates will be provided as the situation develops.

“Isolated storms and heavy rainfall events are likely in some areas. This rainfall is likely to mark the onset of the rainy season in several parts of the country, although subsequent updates will be issued, “Weatherman added.

Fluctuating rainfall patterns 

In a previous weather update issued on March 13, 2025, the department predicted fluctuating rainfall patterns, stating that while rainfall intensity would decrease in the middle of the week, it is expected to pick up again as the forecast period concludes. Additionally, isolated heavy downpours may occur both at the start and the end of the seven-day forecast period.

According to the forecast, most parts of Kenya would experience a temporary break in rainfall during the midweek before precipitation resumes towards the end of the week. The regions expected to receive rainfall include the Highlands both west and east of the Rift Valley, including Nairobi, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, the South-Eastern Lowlands, the Coastal region, as well as parts of Northwestern and Northeastern Kenya.

“Weather Outlook: 11–17 March 2025 Rain takes a break over most parts midweek, then resumes at the end of the week! Rainfall is expected over Highlands West & East of the Rift Valley (incl. Nairobi), Lake Victoria Basin, Rift Valley, South-eastern Lowlands, Coast & parts of Northwestern & Northeastern Kenya. Rainfall intensity will reduce midweek but increase again towards the end of the period. Isolated heavy rainfall may occur at the start & end of the forecast period. Daytime temperatures: >30°C in Coast, Northeastern & Northwestern Kenya. Nighttime temperatures: <10°C in Highlands East of Rift, Central Rift Valley & Mt. Kilimanjaro region,” the weatherman stated.
