2022 Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya coalition spokesperson Makau Mutua has issued a statement following widespread claims of him meeting former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua at a restaurant within Kiambu County.
Taking to his official X account on Saturday, March 15, 2025, Mutua set the record straight on the meeting that was purportedly also attended by former Attorney General Githu Muigai.
However, Mutua has distanced himself from such a meeting, stating that he neither met Gachagua nor Githu Muigai at Sarvid Gardens on Friday, March 14, 2015.
Meeting Gachagua
He went ahead to insist that he has never met Gachagua and that he has no such plans.
“JUST to set the record straight. I met neither Rigathi Gachagua nor former AG Githu Muigai at Sarvid Gardens yesterday. I’ve never met Mr. Gachagua and have no such plans,” he stated.

Paul Muite meeting
However, he admitted that he was indeed at Sarvid Gardens on Friday but was meeting someone else.
According to Mutua, he was at the restaurant to meet Senior Counsel Paul Muite over nyama choma, terming those spreading the rumours about him having a meeting with Gachagua as idle people.
“However, I did meet my great friend SC @Paul_Muite there to catch up over Nyama Choma. Too many idle people!” Mutua stated.
His admission to having met Muite might, however, spark more speculations considering that the Senior Counsel was Gachagua’s legal lead during his impeachment case hearings.
The rumours about the purported meeting were first shared on X by popular influencer-cum-blogger Scorphine Aoko Otieno through her X handle, sparking mixed reactions.
Mutua’s relationship with Raila
Mutua has been Raila’s staunch supporter and ally for a long time. Recently, he was part of Raila’s campaign team for the failed African Union Commission (AUC) contest.
As a law professor and former spokesperson for Raila’s 2022 failed presidential quest, Makau Mutua has been instrumental in shaping the former prime minister’s public image.
Mutua had advised Gachagua to step down before he faced the risk of impeachment, just when the plans to oust him were taking shape.
Mutua warned that impeachment would be politically devastating for Gachagua.
“My free advice to DP Rigathi Gachagua: please resign before you are impeached. Impeachment is a political death penalty that bars you from holding any public office in Kenya for life,” the lawyer wrote on X.
