Gor Mahia new signing promises one thing against AFC Leopards in the Mashemeji Derby

The Mashemeji derby will be played later this season but Gor Mahia new signing has vowed to make a name for himself during the encounter.

New Gor Mahia signing Patrick Essombe has put AFC Leopards on notice, promising to slay them when the two sides meet in the much-awaited Mashemeji Derby in April.

The Cameroonian, who joined the record FKF Premier League champions in the mid-season transfer window, has said even though he has never heard of the Mashemeji Derby, he is a player who scores in big matches.

Speaking to Mozzart Sports, Essombe said:  “I had heard of Gor Mahia before I came to Kenya and even followed some of their past continental performances. I had, however, not heard of the Mashemeji Derby. I like big matches and hopefully I will score in both.”

The Mashemeji Derby which was to be played on March 2, was postponed for the second time this season owing to unavailability of venue. According to the fixtures, the match will be played on April 6, and as is the norm, fireworks will be expected.

Essombe admits that he’s taken little time to adjust and adapt to the Gor Mahia culture. As part of his adaptation, assistant captain Geoffrey Ochieng explained to him the impotance of the Mashemeji derby. “I am adapting to the Kenyan culture and football well. I have learnt several things from the time I landed. My teammates have told me that matches against Leopards are not ordinary league fixtures. I found it interesting and I am looking forward to scoring goals in both legs.”

Essombe has so far played two matches at Gor Mahia after joining the defending champions from Sportive de Douala, along with his compatriot and goalkeeper Giscard Mavoungou.

The winger made his K’Ogallo bow in the the Cup competition and his league debut was against Kariobangi Sharks, where the mercurial winger lasted 45 minutes on the pitch before coach Sinca Mihic withdrew him. Gor Mahia are chasing a record 22nd title and are involved in a three-way title battle with Kenya Police and Tusker FC.
