President William Ruto has urged the youth to take up jobs in the Affordable Housing programme and the Nairobi River regeneration initiative, stating that the project offers employment to different professionals and casual labourers.

Speaking during his visit to Kasarani on Friday, March 14, 2025, Ruto indicated that he would be increasing the number of workers in the Nairobi River regeneration and affordable housing units.

Kazi haiwezikufuata nyumbani. Lazima ujitume. Sasa wewe si uende huko ujipange na ajira,” Ruto said.

(You have to be proactive to get jobs. Today, I will be launching the construction of 5,000 affordable housing programme units. Be on the lookout for jobs for engineers, plumbers, masons, carpenters, errand persons, and women providing food for the labourers. Why can’t you go there and get the jobs?

Affordable housing construction

During his fifth day of touring the 17 constituencies of Nairobi County, Ruto revealed that at least 100,000 affordable housing units will be constructed in Nairobi County alone, spelling steady jobs for the unemployed youth in the country.

The Head of State equally remarked that he would be increasing the number of youth engaged in the Nairobi River regeneration programme to 50,000 youth in the next month.

Pact with Raila

Ruto also drummed up support for his recent pact with Raila Odinga’s ODM party to partner in delivering the Kenya-Kwanza administration’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA).

He urged Kenyans to embrace unity in diversity, noting that the country could accommodate everyone and all people from all communities.

In his previous tours, Ruto promised to transform the sprawling informal settlements in areas of Mathare and Kibera into hygienic estates with decent housing during his term.

Mimi nimeamua Mathare haitakuwa slum tena; hii Mathare tutabadilisha iwe city na iwe estate mahali kuna nyumba safi na kuna heshima,” Ruto said.

(I have resolved that Mathare should no longer be a slum. We shall transform Mathare into a city and an estate with hygienic houses and respect.)

He also promised the same for Kibera slums, stating that he will construct electricity and sewerage lines in the area and move residents to affordable housing units in the area.
