Popular Matatu Sacco Super Metro has issued a statement after a passenger died following an altercation with the crew over fare.

In a statement on Wednesday, March 12, 2025, Super Metro revealed that while the investigations are ongoing, they have suspended the crew of the bus which was involved in the incident.

The bus sacco equally revealed that they took life seriously and that such behaviour is intolerable in their business.

“We are deeply saddened by the tragic incident involving one of the buses operating under our company’s name. Our thoughts and condolences go out to the victim’s family and loved ones during this difficult time,” Super Metro said in a statement.

Under investigation

“While the matter is under investigation, we want to assure everyone that we take safety very seriously. We do not condone reckless behaviour, and as a precautionary measure, the crew involved in this incident has been suspended pending further investigation. We will fully cooperate with authorities to ensure justice is served.”

Super Metro noted that they understood the agitation and anger of members of the public following the bizarre incident, stating that no person should lose their life in such a manner.

“We understand that the public is angry, and rightfully so. No one should lose their life in such a senseless manner. At Supermetro, we hold the sanctity of human life as a core value guiding our actions and decisions,” the statement reads.

Passenger safety

The bus sacco revealed that it would be rolling out safety training for its buses to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.

“Moving forward, we are reinforcing strict safety protocols and training to prevent such tragedies. We appreciate the public’s patience and trust as we work to uphold the highest standards in passenger safety.”

In March 2023, a passenger died in similar circumstances after an altercation with a matatu crew over bus fare.

The incident has exposed an underlying unprofessionalism and indiscipline in the industry which largely controls the transport sector in the city.

In July 2017, Chief Magistrate Francis Andayi handed a death sentence to a matatu driver, his conductor and a petrol station attendant who were found guilty of sexually assaulting a female passenger at a filling station in Githurai 44 in 2014.

The three men were found to have stripped the female passenger, assaulted and taken videos of her, which would be played during their sentencing.
