As the world prepares to celebrate International Women’s Day on Saturday, March 8, 2025, Chief Justice Martha Koome has made a powerful call for the empowerment of women and girls.
In her statement ahead of the global event, on Friday, March 7, 2025, Koome emphasized that investing in women’s empowerment is not only a moral imperative but also a strategic move towards achieving a more equitable and prosperous world.
Koome noted that when women thrive, nations flourish. She highlighted the importance of removing barriers and opening up opportunities for women, ensuring they can contribute to society to their fullest potential.
The Chief Justice also pointed out that empowering women is essential for sustainable development, as it unlocks opportunities not just for individual women, but for families, communities, and entire nations.
Urging for more inclusive spaces where women can influence change at every level of society, Koome called to action for a brighter, more inclusive future for all.
“On this International Women’s Day, I believe that recognition, support, and investment in women’s empowerment is not just a moral imperative but also a strategic move towards a more equitable and prosperous Africa and world,” Koome said.
“Indeed, by removing barriers and opening up opportunities for women and girls, we can harness the full potential of half of our population, ensuring a brighter future for our country, continent, and the world. Therefore, women’s empowerment and progress is progress for all of us – when women thrive, nations flourish.”
Her message aligns with Kenya’s broader vision of gender equality, advocating for greater recognition, support, and investment in women’s rights.

International women’s day
International Women’s Day, celebrated globally on March 8, each year, serves as both a celebration of the achievements of women and a call for continued action toward gender equality, the empowerment of women everywhere and a step toward building a more inclusive and equal future.
This day provides an opportunity to recognize the vital role women play in shaping societies, economies, and cultures around the world.
International Women’s Day is also an opportunity to reflect on the work still needed to create a more equitable world for all genders. It calls for collective action to dismantle barriers, challenge stereotypes, and foster an environment where women and girls can thrive without facing discrimination or inequality.
The theme of International Women’s Day varies each year, but it always focuses on addressing the challenges that women face while promoting the advancement of women’s rights.
