Ruto and Raila sign political agreement

President William Ruto and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga on Friday, March 7, 2025, signed a joint government agreement.

Raila and Ruto signed the deal at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC), allowing the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) to collaborate with Kenya Kwanza to deliver campaign pledges to the people.

The historical moment between the former foes turned allies was witnessed by lawmakers drawn from both sides of political formations.

The head of state was flanked by Deputy President Kithure Kindiki and Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah, among other Kenya Kwanza legislators.

Other government officials, including Cabinet Secretaries and Principal Secretaries, also graced the event, where a scarlet red mat was unfurled for both leaders.

The ODM side was represented by key officials, including Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, ODM Chairperson Gladys Wanga and Deputy Party Leader Simba Arati.

The signing was preceded by prayers before Narok Senator Ledama Ole Kina took center stage to MC the event.

Before the two put pen to paper, the Secretary General of both parties (Sifuna ODM and Hassan Omar UDA) read out key issues they had agreed to address jointly.

They included the full implementation of the National Dialogue Committee (NADCO) report.

Fighting corruption, creating employment opportunities for the youth, tackling conflict of interest, auditing the national debt, and ensuring compensation of protest victims were among the issues they agreed to address.

Here are some issues the two would address:

1. Full implementation of the NADCO Report

2. Inclusivity in all public life

3. Protecting and strengthening devolution

4. Promoting and protecting the livelihoods of young people

5. Promote leadership and integrity

6. Protect the right to peaceful assembly and protest

7. Audit the national debt

8. Fight against corruption

9. Stopping wastage of public resources and promoting government efficiency

10. Protecting the Sovereignty of the people, the rule of law and constitutionalism

Raila affirmed that the agreement would help address major ills bedeviling the country.
