President William Ruto is holding a Parliamentary Group (PG) meeting with allied MPs at State House Nairobi, even as reports emerge that he could be planning to form a Government of National Unity with opposition leader Raila Odinga.
The meeting was announced by National Assembly Majority Whip Sylvanus Osoro, who sent a text message to the MPs indicating that they would share breakfast with the head of state before proceeding with the PG.
“Colleagues, H.E the President Dr.WSR invites you all for breakfast in STATEHOUSE Nairobi at exactly 7am, and thereafter a PG meeting at the same venue. Please keep time,” Osoro told the MPs.
Govt of National Unity
Sources within the government have intimated to People Daily Digital that Ruto could announce a joint government with Raila, with the ODM supremo controlling almost half of government.
As a result, Raila, who recently lost the African Union Commission (AUC) chairmanship, could influence several appointments into government, including cabinet secretaries.
Several senior government officials who have fallen out of favour with Ruto could be shown the door in the new government structure, and their slots filled by men and women from Raila’s political wing.
Several politicians have been warming up to the union, with Raila having been courted by both the opposition and the government.
“Today is a big day, the beginning of the journey to President Ruto’s reelection in 2027!” stated Kisumu Senator Tom Ojienda.
Already, Raila has had his allies appointed into government, including four cabinet secretaries. The four include John Mbadi (Treasury), James Opiyo Wandayi (Energy), Ali Hassan Joho (Mining and Blue Economy) and Wycliffe Oparanya (Cooperatives and MSMEs Development). The appointments were made in July 2024.
In December 2024, Raila allies Prof Adams Oloo, Joe Ager and Dr Silvester Kasuku were appointed as State House advisors, pointing to a political marriage between the president and Raila.
This is not the first time Raila will be joining the government even after the electoral commission announced different persons as the winners of the presidential seat.
Previously, Raila has joined governments led by presidents Daniel Moi, Mwai Kibaki and Uhuru Kenyatta.
