‘Honey moon is done’- Sinisa Mihic asserts as Gor Mahia keep rivals on edge

Gor Mahia inched closer towards a record-extending 22nd league title with a resounding win over Kariobangi Sharks.

Gor Mahia head coach Sinisa Mihic expressed optimism about his team’s trajectory following their hard-fought 3-1 victory over Kariobangi Sharks at Dandora Stadium on Wednesday.

The FKF Premier League (FKFPL) defending champions had to come from behind to secure all three points, against a resilient Kariobangi Sharks.

An Austine Odhiambo brace in the second half and Alpha Onyango’s first-half equalizer helped K’Ogalo overturn an early deficit after Fortune Omoto had given Sharks the lead.

South African Benni McCarthy playfully shares concerns as he takes charge of Harambee Stars

Mihic, who was a passionate figure on the touchline, even received a yellow card for protesting what he believed should have been a penalty when Odhiambo was brought down in the box in the 12th minute.

Despite the turbulence in his early tenure, Mihic remains confident that his side has moved past the so-called honeymoon period and is now on the right track.

Speaking to the press after the match, including Pulse Sports, the Croatian tactician asserted that Gor Mahia’s season is beginning to stabilize.

“Congratulations to my players. They gave a lot of effort in this game today. And also, congratulations to Kariobangi Sharks because they impressed me,” Mihic reflected.

New Harambee Stars coach Benni McCarthy will begin his Kenyan assignment with 2026 World Cup qualifiers this month but which players risk missing out?

“Now, the honeymoon is done with my team. Everything is going in the right direction, and I believe in my players. We will be champions, you know.”

Mihic, who has overseen five matches so far without tasting defeat—winning three and drawing two—has already faced significant pressure.

The postponed Mashemeji Derby intensified expectations from fans eager for a strong performance against their arch-rivals, but Mihic now hopes that Wednesday’s win will be a springboard for sustained success.

Kenya Police currently leads the standings with 42 points, closely followed by Tusker at 41, while Gor Mahia sits third with 39 points and a game in hand on both competitors.

Mihic emphasized the importance of their squad reinforcements in closing the gap, noting that new signings must prove themselves before earning a place in the team.

“New players need to show me. Time will tell. They need to impress me to get a chance to play. I don’t know them very well, so let’s see. If you bring a famous player, you know what to expect, but I don’t know them yet,” he stated.

In their push for the title, Gor Mahia has reinforced their squad with key acquisitions, including goalkeeper Giscard Mavoungou, right-back Kevin Monyi, midfielders Ben Stanley and Sydney Ogutu, and strikers Patrick Essombe and Charles Bbaale.

However, the club also parted ways with five players as part of the restructuring. Sydney Ochieng, Musa Masika, Dolph Owino, Enock Wanyama, and Kevin Juma have all left the club.

With the title race heating up, Gor Mahia will rely on their strengthened squad and Mihic’s tactical acumen to push for another league triumph.
