Rachel Ruto launches new initiative targeting women

First Lady Rachel Ruto on Wednesday, March 5, 2025, launched a new initiative targeting young women in the country.

In a statement, Rachel Ruto announced the formation of the First Lady’s Women Leadership Fellowship. The initiative is aimed at equipping women with skills to make a lasting impact on the nation.

While launching the initiative, Rachel Ruto explained that the First Lady’s Women Leadership Fellowship will help deepen gender equity in the nation. She highlighted that the fellowship is designed to ensure women get proper access to opportunities, resources, and information to thrive.

Defending the launch of the new initiative, Rachel lamented over various obstacles in the way of women and called for concerted efforts to protect their rights and create an environment where they can flourish.

“I joined the Kenya School of Government’s Women Conference as part of the 2025 International Women’s Week celebrations. During this event, we also launched the First Lady’s Women Leadership Fellowship, an initiative designed to equip young women with the skills and knowledge they need to make a greater impact on our nation’s social and economic development,” Rachel Ruto’s statement read in part.

Mama doing good

First Lady’s Women Leadership Fellowship will add to her other initiatives, including Mama Doing Good.

MaMa Doing Good is the organisation that implements the vision and Rachel Ruto’s programmes. The organization catalyses socio-economic transformation in communities to achieve a quality holistic life through spirituality, collective agency, voice, and influence.

As part of MaMa Doing Good, she runs the Women Economic Empowerment Directorate, which empowers women economically through access to affordable credit, knowledge, skills development, market access, and linkages.

The MaMa Doing Good organisation also participates in the national tree growing restoration campaign to plant and grow 15 billion trees by 2032. Their target is to plant 500 million trees by 2032.

She is also involved in capacity building and providing food security.

In 2009, Rachel Ruto founded Joyful Women Organization, an initiative to financially empower rural women she is also a champion of faith diplomacy, mental health, and wellness.
