In a bid to enhance garbage collection, disposal and promote better waste management across Kiambu County, Governor Kimani Wamatangi has launched the distribution of 42 skips and 140 trash bins.
The initiative is aimed at improving cleanliness and reducing the burden on waste management systems and is set to be rolled out across all sub-counties within the county.
Presiding over the event, the Governor emphasized the critical role that effective waste management played in creating healthier communities and maintaining environmental sustainability.
“The introduction of these skips and bins marks a significant step in our commitment to promoting cleanliness and reducing the environmental impact of unmanaged waste. This initiative will ensure that all our residents have easy access to proper waste disposal options,” he said.
The newly distributed skips and bins will be placed in key areas across the county, including markets, residential estates, and public spaces, where the need for effective waste disposal is most pressing.
The distribution is expected to streamline garbage collection and prevent the illegal dumping of waste, which has been a persistent challenge in some areas.
Wamatangi said the move was part of a broader plan to enhance infrastructure for waste management, including the development of new collection routes and the introduction of more environmentally friendly disposal methods.
He further assured the residents that regular collection schedules would be implemented to ensure that the bins and skips were emptied promptly, reducing the risk of overflowing trash that contributes to unsanitary conditions.
The Governor also encouraged residents to take responsibility for their waste by properly sorting and disposing of their garbage in the provided bins.
“Our collective effort is needed to keep our county clean and sustainable. Let us all play our part in ensuring that these new facilities are used effectively to maintain a clean and healthy environment,” Wamatangi urged.
As part of the launch, the county government is also planning to roll out an awareness campaign to educate residents on the importance of waste segregation and responsible disposal practices.
Local leaders and residents praised the initiative, noting that the timely distribution of these bins and skips would improve overall public health and contribute to a cleaner, more organised environment.
“This milestone comes at a time when delegates from 19 countries are in Kiambu for benchmarking and training on waste management systems. With an impressive 90% garbage collection rate, Kiambu stands out as a model county in efficient waste management systems. This is for sure a clear testament that the county’s strategies are not only effective but also worth emulating,” said Kiambu County Executive Committee Member for Water and Environment David Kuria.
The initiative is expected to be a turning point in waste management within Kiambu County, setting an example for other counties to follow in addressing the growing challenge of garbage disposal.
