‘My physical condition is excellent’- Rosemary Wanjiru details plan to dethrone Ethiopians in Tokyo

Rosemary Wanjiru aims to reclaim her Tokyo Marathon title, surpass her personal best, and overcome a strong Ethiopian challenge.

Rosemary Wanjiru is planning to take back her title as she lines up against a strong Ethiopian cast at the Tokyo Marathon.

Wanjiru won the title at the 2023 edition of the event but it was snatched from her in 2024, with Ethiopia’s Sutume Asefa Kebede taking the win. The Kenyan was forced to finish second in 2:16:14.

Rosemary Wanjiru revealed that she has done all the training needed and she will be looking to take back what rightfully belongs to her and also clock a faster time than her current personal best time.

Despite the defending champion being in the line-up, Rosemary Wanjiru is not scared and she will be banking on her familiarity with the course and tough training to impress one more time.

“I’m very happy to be running in the Tokyo Marathon once again…thank you very much to the organisers for inviting me again,” Rosemary Wanjiru said.

“My physical condition is excellent, I’ve done very good training and I’m looking forward to Sunday’s race. Having come to Tokyo, I have been training well.”

The Jamaican sprinter revealed that loyalty to Jamaica and financial responsibilities have kept him competing, despite opportunities to retire much earlier.


She is unaware of the time she wants to run in the streets of Tokyo but admitted that it should be something under two hours and 15 minutes.

Rosemary Wanjiru also revealed that last season, she intended to compete at the Berlin Marathon but a few health challenges hindered her from fulfilling her dream.

She has beautiful memories of the German capital since it was there that she made her full marathon debut and finished an impressive second.

“I wanted to go to Berlin but because of my condition, I was unable to race. I have been doing great training and on Sunday, my goal is to achieve my personal best time and win the race. I don’t know the time I want to run but it should be faster than my current personal best time,” Wanjiru revealed.

Rosemary Wanjiru ended her 2024 season with a third-place finish at the Bangsaen21 Half Marathon and since then, she has invested her time into training with her first challenge of the season being in Tokyo.
