‘I hope we shall run fast times’- Faith Kipyegon stays optimistic despite Sirikwa Classic setback

Despite her setback at the Sirikwa Classic, Faith Kipyegon remains optimistic about the season ahead, aiming for fast times and new records on the track.

Despite registering a did not finish at the Sirikwa Classic World Cross Country Tour, double world champion Faith Kipyegon is hopeful about having a great season, much better than how things went in 2024.

Faith Kipyegon was hoping to have a great season opener at the Lobo Village in Eldoret but things did not go as planned as she was forced to withdraw from the race, looking all fatigued from racing in the hot sun and windy conditions.

In the race, the three-time Olympic 1500m champion was looking forward to reclaim the title she won in 2023. Agnes Ngetich carried the day in the race.

However, she remains confident about enjoying her track season as she looks forward to her first race of the season at the Diamond League Meeting in Xiamen where she will be competing in the 1000m.

The Olympic 5000m silver medallist revealed that she is healthy and hopes to lower her world record time, especially in the one mile.

Faith Kipyegon set the previous world record at the Diamond League Meeting in Monaco where she clocked an impressive 4:07.64 to win the race.

“For me, the 1500m or the mile is still the same and there is not much difference between the two distances,” Faith Kipyegon said on the sidelines after the pre-race press conference.

“I don’t know, we will what this year will bring in and I hope we shall run fast times like last year. The 2024 season was really good and we hope this year will be much better.”

The 2024 season yielded mixed results for the former world 5000m record holder who started her races a bit late due to an injury setback.

She had been confirmed for several Diamond League Meetings but had to pull out and ended up beginning her season at the Kenyan Olympic trials.

Faith Kipyegon won the 1500m and 5000m races and was hoping to extend the winning streak to the Paris Olympic Games.

At the Olympics, she finished second behind Beatrice Chebet in the controversial 5000m race that saw her disqualified for a minute due to obstruction. She then bounced back with a dominant 1500m victory, successfully defending her title.

Faith Kipyegon then proceeded to the Diamond League Meeting in Rome, winning the 1500m before winning her fifth diamond trophy at the Diamond League Meeting final in Brussels.

The three-time world 1500m champion then rounded up her season with a commanding victory at Athlos, Alexis Ohanian’s women-only event.
