Interior and National Administration Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has sent a message of condolence to the family of a Kenyan police officer who was killed while serving in the Multinational Security Support Mission (MSSM) in Haiti.

The officer, whose identity has not been revealed, sustained injuries during a security operation in Ségur – Savien, in the Artibonite department, on February 23, 2025. He was airlifted to Aspen Level 2 Hospital for treatment but, unfortunately, succumbed to his injuries.

In a statement shared on his X account on Monday, February 24, 2025, Murkomen expressed deep sorrow over the loss of the officer. He described him as a gallant officer dedicated to peacekeeping efforts in Haiti and assured his family of the government’s support during this difficult time.

“I’m deeply saddened by the news of the death of one of our gallant officers who was on peacekeeping duties in Haiti under the Multinational Security Support Mission (MSS). The officer passed on in hospital from injuries he sustained while on a security operation on 23rd February, 2025. My deepest sympathies go to his family, friends and colleagues. We will do everything possible to support the family during this difficult time of grief. We are immensely grateful for his contribution to our country and the stability of Haiti,” Murkomen stated.

The death of the officer was confirmed by the Multinational Security Support Mission (MSSM), who released a statement earlier. MSSM Force Commander Godfrey Otunge acknowledged the tragic incident but did not disclose specific details about the circumstances of the operation that led to the officer’s injuries.

“Today, Sunday, February 23rd, 2025, one of our MSS officers from the Kenyan contingent was injured during an operation in SÉGUR – SAVIEN, in the Artibonite department. The officer was immediately airlifted to Aspen Level 2 Hospital but, unfortunately, succumbed to the injuries,” the statement read.

Kenya has been leading efforts to restore peace in Haiti through the MSSM, working in collaboration with the Haiti National Police (HNP) to stabilize the Caribbean nation. The deployment of Kenyan officers was a significant step in fulfilling Kenya’s promise to contribute to global peacekeeping efforts.

He emphasized the dedication of Kenyan officers in working alongside international partners to restore order in areas affected by gang violence.

“The Mission , in collaboration with the Haiti National Police (HNP), is working tirelessly to restore peace and stability in Haiti. We commend the National Police Officers in Haiti who remain committed to achieving the mandate of the Multinational Security Support Mission.”
