Government provides update on Bukhungu & Masinde Muliro Stadia renovation ahead of AFCON 2027

Government provides update over the progress of Bukhungu & Masinde Muliro Stadia, which are undergoing renovation as part of the government’s project to upgrade various facilities in the country ahead of the 2027 AFCON.

Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya and Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa have expressed confidence in the ongoing construction at Bukhungu Stadium, assuring that the venue will be ready in time for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The National Government revised Bukhungu’s construction plans in May 2024 to meet FIFA and CAF standards, allocating Ksh760 million to support Kakamega County in completing the project.

However, work stalled after the contractor abandoned the site, prompting President William Ruto to order the resumption of construction earlier this year.

Despite earlier delays, Mvurya remains optimistic that the stadium will be completed by June 2026, in line with President Ruto’s directive.

“We are both satisfied and happy that Bukhungu International Stadium will be completed in record time for AFCON 2027 because the government has already decided that some matches will be hosted here,” he stated during a joint press conference with Governor Barasa last Saturday.

Governor Barasa echoed these sentiments, highlighting Bukhungu’s potential to become one of East Africa’s premier sports venues.

“Looking at the scope of work, this will be one of the best stadia in East Africa. We are paying special attention to the pitch, ensuring it meets state-of-the-art standards. We are confident that this stadium will be among the CAF-accredited venues for AFCON 2027.”

'That upset me deeply'- Usain Bolt calls out Yohan Blake & others for disregarding coach Glen Mills

Usain Bolt has expressed disappointment in Yohan Blake and others for failing to follow Coach Glen Mills’ guidance, which led to their struggles.

Last month, President Ruto issued a stern ultimatum, ordering the contractor to complete the project by June 2026 or risk losing the tender.

Initially, Bukhungu was set to host matches for the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), which Kenya is co-hosting with Uganda and Tanzania. However, due to delays, the stadium was deemed unfit for use.

Other Kenyan venues earmarked for AFCON 2027 include the Moi International Sports Centre Kasarani and the newly built Talanta Sports Stadium along Ngong Road.

During the tour of Bukhungu’s construction site, Mvurya, accompanied by Governor Barasa, assured that the government is satisfied with the progress. “Apart from Bukhungu, we have Kanduyi Stadium in Bungoma that is 90% complete, and we are currently fitting 10,000 seats,” said the CS.
