A press briefing by Juja MP George Koimburi on Thursday, February 20, 2025 outside the Kiambu Law Courts took an unexpected turn after the legislator, moments after learning of his extended cash bail, dramatically fled the scene on a waiting motorbike—leaving onlookers in sheer disbelief.

A video shared by K24 TV captures the chaotic moment as the MP, flanked by his supporters, erupted into a solidarity chant seemingly aimed at deflecting attention.

However, in a sudden disruption, Koimburi swiftly darted towards a parked boda boda, mounted it, and sped off.

The courthouse vicinity descended into confusion, with stunned bystanders yelling while others scrambled in an attempt to chase after the fleeing politician and his entourage.

Before the escape, one of his close allies is seen in the footage leaning in and whispering something into his ear.

Within seconds, the MP and his team cut short the briefing, turned back as if consulting, and then—without warning—he made his dash.

Charges

Koimburi had been arraigned over allegations of forging academic documents in a case that was initially withdrawn in 2022 but revived on February 19, 2025.

The embattled MP now faces a total of seven charges, including his failure to honor previous court summons.

His troubles escalated after his arrest on the morning of February 18, 2025, just days after making incendiary remarks accusing the government of spending a staggering Ksh13 billion to campaign for Raila Odinga’s bid for the African Union Commission (AUC) chairmanship.

Koimburi, an outspoken critic of President William Ruto’s administration, had publicly lambasted the alleged expenditure, arguing that the funds should have been allocated to pressing national priorities.

“We are disheartened to witness President William Ruto squander Ksh13 billion of taxpayers’ money—resources that could have been channeled into infrastructure, electricity, water, and business development—just to push Raila Odinga’s AUC bid,” Koimburi remarked.

His lawyer, Ndegwa Njiru, later stated that Koimburi’s arrest was politically motivated, linking it directly to his remarks about the AUC elections, where Odinga lost to Djibouti’s Mahmoud Ali Youssouf.
