Dundee United coach on why Harambee Stars midfielder Richard Odada’s loan move to Serbian outfit is good for his future

Dundee United coach Jim Goodwin has explained why Richard Odada’s move to Serbian outfit OFK Beograd could be the best thing for his career.

Dundee United head coach Jim Goodwin believes midfielder Richard Odada’s move to Serbian Superliga side OFK Beograd on loan for the remainder of the season could be crucial for the Kenyan international’s development.

Odada made his OFK Beograd debut on Saturday, February 15, 2025, coming off the bench in the 85th minute during a tough 4-1 loss against Serbian giants and vice-champions, Partizan.

Although he had limited playing time, he displayed glimpses of his potential, suggesting that he could be an important reinforcement for the Romantics as they aim for European qualification.

South African legend Benni McCarthy has been heavily linked with the Harambee Stars job and here is everything you need to know about the former Bafana Bafana striker.

As he settles into his new surroundings, Odada will look to cement a regular starting role and build his confidence ahead of his return to Dundee United in the summer.

Odada, 24, has previous experience in Serbian football, having played for Red Star Belgrade and Graficar Beograd.

His familiarity with the league, coupled with his wife’s Serbian roots, made the switch seamless. OFK Beograd, currently fifth in the Superliga and just one point outside the European qualification spots, sees the Kenyan as a key asset in their push for continental football.

“Richard has been given the opportunity to go and play regular football, which is something he has struggled with here,” Goodwin stated.

“I wouldn’t underestimate the Serbian league. It’s a tough, competitive league with a lot of good technical players.”

Goodwin further noted that Odada’s struggles at Dundee United stemmed from a difficult start, including missing pre-season and constantly playing catch-up.

“It’s difficult for new players if they don’t set the heather alight at the beginning. It can impact confidence. Coming in late and not getting a full pre-season hasn’t helped.

“In the games he has played, unfortunately, he hasn’t performed at the level we would expect. That means you come out of the team and somebody else gets the chance. He’s completely understanding of it.”

The midfielder’s first season in Scottish football has been challenging, with only 13 appearances for Dundee United, three of which were starts. Given his limited playing time, Goodwin acknowledges that Odada needed regular minutes to regain confidence and match sharpness.

Despite flashes of brilliance in games against Hibernian and St Johnstone, Odada has largely failed to make a lasting impact, including being substituted after just 38 minutes in a 1-0 defeat to Hearts.

However, his new loan spell provides a fresh start and an opportunity to showcase his ability in a familiar setting.

His contract with the Scottish club runs until 2026, and this loan move could prove instrumental in his bid to earn a starting place upon his return to Tannadice.
