Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce has reflected on the fear and uncertainty she faced when deciding to return to sprinting after motherhood.
Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce has opened up about one of the scariest moments of her career and why she thought her career would be over then.
The 10-time world champion revealed that deciding to have a child at 30 was a risk and she had not seen many women bounce back after childbirth, especially at such an advanced age.
Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce explained that sprinting is a complex sport and she had a lot of doubts despite knowing that she wanted to have a child.
Coach Duncan Ayiemba revealed the behind-the-scenes challenges, including unexpected changes in Ferdinand Omanyala’s support team, that led to his disappointing performance in Budapest.
The three-time Olympic champion explained that on many occasions, she was uncertain about making a comeback despite deeply knowing that continuing with her career was something she wanted.
“I took the time off at the time I didn’t want to because there is so much fear when it comes to athletics and sprinting, especially,” Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce said in an interview with TJ Sports USA.
“You don’t see a lot of women 30 deciding that they are taking a year off and coming back so you’re always afraid to do it.”
Shelly-Ann added that having her son was one thing but working towards getting back into her shape was another, revealing that it was not easy.
However, her team was there for her and encouraged her on her comeback journey and that’s how she managed to continue her winning ways.
“I mean, Jessica did it and it was phenomenal but not a lot of women do it so there are not many examples,” Shelly-Ann said.
