‘We are not going to complain much’- Barnaba Korir confident stadiums will be ready for Kip Keino Classic

Barnaba Korir reassures that despite challenges, stadium renovations will be completed in time for the Kip Keino Classic and World Championships trials.

Athletics Kenya Nairobi Region chairman Barnaba Korir is confident that stadiums will be ready to host the Kip Keino Classic and the Kenyan national trials for the World Championships in Tokyo, Japan.

The 2025 edition of the Kip Keino Classic is scheduled for May 31, 2025, at the Nyayo National Stadium. Korir explained that he and AK president Jack Tuwei are in talks with the relevant authorities to ensure that the event is first considered and things are looking up.

Being the Kip Keino Classic meet director, he will have all eyes on him to deliver and Korir is certainly burning the midnight oil and stretching to the limits to ensure Kenya once again delivers.

Coach Duncan Ayiemba revealed the behind-the-scenes challenges, including unexpected changes in Ferdinand Omanyala’s support team, that led to his disappointing performance in Budapest.

“We have been following up on that with the relevant authorities…there is a tartan in Mombasa and the ministry has been following up so that when we have it, they can install it and hope that by April we shall be there for the Kip Keino Classic,” Korir said in an interview with Athletics TV.

“Athletics Kenya is pushing that and I’m sure that we are going to save cards so that our athletes can use this. The federation is working very closely with the ministry and the government is coming on board to support that.”

He urged the athletes to maintain their patience since once everything is done, the stadiums are going to serve them for long.

Korir pointed out that the process is going swiftly and gave credit to the government for its support, revealing that the athletes will surely be considered where necessary.

“The stadiums continue to be renovated and we are giving credit to the government for the work they are doing,” Korir said.

“We will sacrifice so that the stadiums can be finished so we are not going to complain much because we have seen the action going on, something that was not there before.”

Last year, several major stadiums in Kenya including the Moi International Sports Centre and Nyayo National Stadium were closed for renovations and upgrades in preparation for the 2024 CHAN and 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.

CHAN was supposed to be held earlier this year, from February 1 to 28 but due to the unpreparedness, it was postponed to August 2 to 30 to be hosted by Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania.
