Jakob Ingebrigtsen makes history as he smashes Yared Nuguse’s world indoor mile record set just five days ago

Jakob Ingebrigtsen had no equals as he lowered the world indoor mile record in France, taking down a time that was set just five days ago by American Yared Nuguse.

Two-time Olympics champion Jakob Ingebrigtsen smashed the world indoor mile record, taking down a time set by American Yared Nuguse just five days ago, as he won his race in Lievin, France on Thursday night.

Ingebrigtsen did not just break the mile indoor world record but also lowered the world 1,500m along the way, having been paced through the first five laps.

The Norwegian covered 400m in 56.39 seconds, 800m in 1:52.55 and 1000m in 2:20.49, before taking command of the race and he was unchallenged up to the finish line.

He went past the 1,500m mark in 3:29.63, taking nearly a second from the world indoor record of 3:30.60 set at the same venue three years ago.

That gave Ingebrigtsen impetus as he increased his pace through the remaining half lap, finishing in 3:45.14, to lower the previous world record of 3:46.63 set by Nuguse at the Millrose Games last Saturday.

“It feels amazing. This is what happens in Lievin. I’m a very happy man. You have to be focused for the whole race. It’s tough, but it’s worth it,” Ingebrigtsen told World Athletics after his first-ever indoor mile race.

The 24-year-old becomes the first athlete to set world records in both mile and 1,500m in the same race since John Landy did it in 1954.

During the race, Stefan Nillessen finished second in 3:52.70, some distance from Ingebrigtsen, while Ireland’s Cathal Doyle completed the podium after clocking 3:53.18.
