An employee of former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has been found guilty of stealing a mobile phone worth Sh55,000.

Dedan Wamuya Mburu alias Kababa was convicted for stealing the phone from a recently adopted orphan of Sonko, a child whose father had tragically been stabbed and killed in Mathare.

The crime took place on February 10, 2025, at Matumbato Road, Upperhill area, within Nairobi County.

Mburu, a former house employee of the former governor, admitted before Milimani Senior Principal Magistrate Dolphina Alego to possessing the mobile phone but denied stealing it intentionally.

However, the prosecution presented damning evidence: CCTV footage played in court showed Mburu taking the phone from the child, slipping it into his pocket, and walking away with it.

When the phone was not returned, Mburu attempted to justify his actions by claiming he had taken it and later returned it, but the footage did not show any such return.

The mobile phone, a Camon 30, had been a prized possession for the orphan, who had been adopted by Sonko after the tragic murder of his father.

The orphan, still grappling with the trauma of the incident, now faced the distress of having his phone stolen by someone in his caregiver’s household.

During his mitigation, Mburu pleaded for leniency, urging the court to consider his family situation.

“Your honour, I pray this honourable court to be lenient with me as I am the sole breadwinner of a young family,” he said, visibly remorseful.

Magistrate Alego, who presided over the case, acknowledged the seriousness of the offense but stated that Mburu’s plea would be considered in her final ruling to be rendered next week.

She instructed the investigating officer to prepare a pre-sentence report, which will be reviewed on February 18, 2025, when the sentence will be delivered.

In the meantime, Mburu was ordered to remain in custody awaiting sentencing.

Mburu was arrested and prosecuted after Sonko reported the matter at the Capitol Hill police station.
