‘He should be impeached’ – Alai slam Wetangula over Kenya Kwanza majority ruling
Kileleshwa MCA Robert Alai has joined Migori Senator Eddy Oketch in calling for the impeachment of National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula following his controversial ruling that upheld Kenya Kwanza as the majority coalition in Parliament.
In a statement on his X account on Wednesday, February 12, 2025, Alai accused Wetangula of lacking the leadership qualities necessary to manage the National Assembly effectively.
“Wetangula should be impeached. He is not able to read the mood of the house. The continuous stay of Wetangula as a speaker is destroying the country. He doesn’t have the wisdom to manage the National Assembly,” Alai wrote.

Impeachable offence
Migori Senator Eddy Oketch supported Alai’s remarks, declaring Wetangula’s ruling an impeachable offence.
In a statement posted on his X account, Oketch accused Wetangula of violating the constitution through his ruling.
“Violation of the constitution is the highest impeachable offence. Even without the speaker’s contemptuous ruling in response to the court declaration, Wetangula stands impeachable on the basis of violating the constitution at the very beginning. Any bold MP in the National Assembly should initiate his impeachment motion,” Oketch wrote on February 12, 2025.

Controversial ruling
These statements came hours after Wetangula ruled to maintain Kenya Kwanza as the majority coalition, despite last week’s High Court judgment that had nullified his earlier declaration.
In his ruling, Wetangula stated that while the High Court invalidated his previous declaration, it did not specifically identify which coalition held the majority status.

“The High Court judgment did not designate which side was the majority or the minority; it only annulled my earlier declaration,” he explained.
Wetangula maintained that the House leadership would remain unchanged, with Kimani Ichung’wah continuing as Majority Leader and Junet Mohammed as Minority Leader.
He cited a lack of formal communication from Azimio regarding any leadership changes.
“I have not received communication from the Azimio One Kenya Coalition party to replace the Suna East MP, the Kathiani MP, the Suba North MP, and the Member for Embakasi West in their preferred leadership roles in the House,” Wetangula clarified.
MPs stage walkout
The Speaker’s decision incited immediate protests from Azimio coalition MPs, who staged a walkout from the National Assembly chambers, led by Suba North MP Millie Odhiambo.

“Mr. Speaker, I would like to tell you that today you are stepping on my mother’s toe. I want to respectfully inform you that I strongly disagree with you, as a strong man, you are stepping on my mother’s toe. As Azimio, we will take further action. I respectfully note your communication, Mr. Speaker,” she declared.
