Ingwe have agreed to part ways with the Rwandan forward who has struggled with off-field issues during his time at the Den.
AFC Leopards have finally parted ways with Rwandan forward Arthur Gitego after an underwhelming one-year stint at the club.
Gitego joined Leopards from Rwandan club Marines FC in January 2024 and despite coming with a big reputation, he has not lived up to expectations, scoring just four goals in the one year he has been at the club.
The striker scored three goals last season and one this term but has made headlines for the wrong reasons with off-field issues affecting his stay at the Den.
AFC Leopards striker Arthur Gitego has refuted allegations of partying and alcohol consumption, citing injury struggles behind his form.
Gitego’s struggles were evident at the back end of last season when he missed several league matches due to off-field controversies, including a brief encounter with law enforcement agencies, that led to a temporary detention.
It led to a strained relationship between club and player and the forward has now gotten his wish of leaving after claiming that the club was frustrating him when he asked for a move away in January.
“We would like to confirm the release of our striker Arthur Gitego on mutual agreement. Arthur had penned a 2-year contract upon joining the club on 16th January 2024 from Marines FC,” Leopards said via a social media post.
Gitego was seen as the man to light up the FKF Premier League and lead Leopards to trophies but he struggled to get going, with former coach Thomas Trucha asking for patience, but as the months went by, it was clear that he was not going to live up to expectations.
His departure will likely force Leopards into the market for attacking reinforcements in the midseason transfer window even though the club is believed to be keen on very limited activity this time.
