Julius Yego has set his ultimate goal for this season before considering retirement, believing 2025 is his year of success.
The 2015 world javelin champion Julius Yego has promised to go for another podium finish at the 20025 World Championships in Tokyo, Japan before thinking about his retirement.
Julius Yego revealed that he has already qualified for the event and what remains now is working hard and smart in training.
The former Olympic Games silver medallist noted that he is getting older and has to be very cautious about things he does, hence the strategic approach to his training ad championships.
Being a staunch believer in lucky numbers, Julius Yego also believes that 2025 has greater things in store for him and is patiently to see how it all turns out.
“I have already qualified for the Tokyo World Championships, so I’m in now and what is there for me is serious training and training smart, of course, I’m ageing so I have to be very smart in training,” Julius Yego said in an interview with CGTN Africa.
“I’m healthy now and hopefully, you know, I always think my lucky number is five and we are in 2025, so I’m really going for it now because I have no more years to compete.”
Yego has been a victim of a series of injuries that have prevented him from showing up in his greatest self but this season seems to have started on a high note.
He failed to make the final at the delayed 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games and the 2022 and 2023 World Championships in Eugene and Budapest respectively, citing injury struggles.
“I also have to be very good at what I’m doing because I rose up again last year after many years of being out injured. I have to go for it, I want to win another medal at the World Championships,” he shared.
The 2024 season presented a great opportunity for his comeback where he started off with a silver medal at the African Games in Accra, Ghana.
Julius Yego competed in several meets before heading to the Africa Senior Athletics Championships where he claimed a gold medal in the javelin, making his fifth win at the event.
He rounded up his season with a fifth-place finish at the Paris Olympic Games, a great performance according to him since he had struggled to make the final in a series of his previous global championships.
