Mathare United coach John Kamau has expressed frustration after his side squandered a goal advantage to lose 2-1 to Gor Mahia.
Mathare United head coach John Kamau has voiced his frustration after his side failed to hold onto an early lead, eventually falling 2-1 to Gor Mahia in a tightly contested match at Dandora Stadium last Saturday.
The Slum Boys appeared to be in control when they took the lead in the 15th minute through Ellie Asieche’s thunderous header.
However, their advantage was short-lived as Gor Mahia responded swiftly. Alphonce Omija restored parity in the 30th minute, rising highest to head in Enock Morrison’s precise free kick.
Morrison has been on a good run of form for Gor Mahia in a more advanced role ever since Austine Odhiambo suffered an unfortunate injury.
Gor Mahia then completed their comeback in the 76th minute when Mathare United defender Daniel Mukok fouled Samuel Kapen in the box. Morrison stepped up and calmly slotted home the penalty, securing all three points for K’Ogalo.
Speaking to Azam TV after the match, Kamau, who also doubles up as Harambee Stars assistant coach under Francis Kimanzi, lamented his team’s lack of experience and costly mistakes.
“It was a game of small margins. We got punished for our mistakes. I think from our side, we tried to play football,” Kamau stated.
Analyzing the goals conceded, Kamau admitted that his team was undone by their own lapses. “Our first goal came from our creativity down the flanks.
He becomes the second Harambee Stars prospect to don Brighton colours after Jonah Ayunga, who came through the club’s academy.
“Then the equalizer was down to a lack of experience, and we were made to pay. The second goal as well—just another mistake that cost us dearly.”
Kamau also highlighted his side’s struggles in attack, noting that against a formidable opponent like Gor Mahia, converting chances is crucial.
“We have to make changes because you do not expect to create a lot of chances against Gor Mahia. We only created three good chances, but we need to be clinical. They took advantage of their chances, and we didn’t.”
With Mathare United currently languishing in 14th place, having failed to win any of their last four matches, Kamau is now looking at the transfer market to bring in reinforcements.
In a separate interview with Flashscore, the former Posta Rangers tactician acknowledged the need for new signings to strengthen the squad and avoid another relegation battle.
“We have to bring in some quality players because I don’t think what we have is really what we need. For this team to remain in the Premier League next season, we must make drastic changes. New players must be considered,” he emphasized.
Despite their current struggles, Kamau remains optimistic that Mathare United can stay clear of relegation. “I don’t think there is an immediate concern for dropping to the relegation zone, but drastic changes must be made in terms of the playing unit.”
Mathare United have already started bolstering their squad with two new signings—midfielder Peter Oudu from Posta Rangers and winger John Nyawir from SamWest Blackboots. The club hopes that these additions will bring much-needed stability and firepower to their squad.
