Heartbreak for Harambee Stars prospect as English club stumbles despite dominant display

Zak Vyner’s Bristol City endured a 1-0 loss despite a dominant display at home.

Harambee Stars hopeful Zak Vyner played the full 90 minutes as Bristol City fell 1-0 to Swansea in an English Championship fixture at Ashton Gate on Sunday.

Trusted by head coach Liam Manning to start in the crucial encounter, Vyner was one of only five outfield players who completed the entire match.

The defender, who has previously received a call-up to the Kenyan national team but is yet to earn his first cap, was deployed prominently on the right side of a back three.

He was partnered with Robert Dickie and Luke McNally in front of goalkeeper Max O’Leary.

Vyner featured as a right back during Bristol City’s 1-0 loss to Frank Lampard’s Coventry City.

Despite showing early attacking intent, Bristol City endured a frustrating evening in front of goal.

Bristol’s captain, Jason Knight, came close to opening the scoring in the eighth minute, only to be denied by a superb save from Swansea goalkeeper Lawrence Vigouroux.

The Robins’ struggles continued in the 23rd minute when Scott Twine’s excellent free-kick delivery found Luke McNally, whose low volley was again brilliantly stopped by Vigouroux.

Despite their efforts, both teams went into the break with the score still level.

Kenyan players continue to impress in various leagues across the world but as the new year starts, who is the most valuable?

Vyner and his teammates’ resilience was undone early in the second half. After absorbing pressure for much of the first half, Swansea found a breakthrough in the 55th minute.

Following an attacking move, Goncalo Franco’s shot was saved by Max O’Leary, but the rebound fell kindly to left-back Josh Tymon, who volleyed home to score his first goal for the Swans.

Bristol City pushed for an equalizer but failed to find the back of the net, eventually succumbing to a disappointing home loss against a lower-ranked Swansea side.

Born in Peckham, London, and raised in Bath, Vyner is eligible to represent Kenya through his mother, while his father is English. Though Vyner has been called up to the Harambee Stars squad, he is yet to make his debut for the national team.
