Julius Yego has dismissed retirement rumours as he prepares for a strong comeback.
The 2015 world javelin champion Julius Yego has quashed retirement rumours as he eyes a successful 2025 season.
Julius Yego noted that he has already started his training and will be ready to begin competition in May, revealing that his main target will be at the World Championships in Tokyo, Japan.
The former Olympic silver medallist will be looking to go one place better from where he left off at the 2023 World Championships in Budapest, Hungary.
Faith Kipyegon, Letsile Tebogo and Algerian boxer Imane Khelif will be honoured at a prestigious event in Algiers in March.
At the event, Julius Yego could not proceed to the final after finishing eighth in the qualifiers and he now has a chance to redeem himself in Tokyo.
“The World Championships, I’m going for it. The preparations are good so far and I think now I’ve covered about 40% and by May, I should be ready to get back into the grind. I’m going for the World Championships, nothing short of that,” Julius Yego said in an interview at the Athletics Kenya Cross Country Championships.
Julius Yego has struggled with injuries in the past and judging from his performance at the Paris Olympic Games, he seems to be on the right trajectory.
To everyone’s surprise, Julius Yego got to the final after finishing second in the qualifiers and then proceeded to the final where he finished fifth.
Yego was unsure about making it to the Games since he missed the qualifying mark during the trials and had to wait for the rankings to know his fate. The rankings worked in his favour and he managed to make the cut to his fourth Olympic Games.
The World Championships also present great memories for Julius Yego who made his debut at the 2013 edition of the event where he finished fourth.
In 2015, Julius Yego claimed the world title after clearing 92.72m to set a new African record. This remains one of his most iconic performances of all time.
He was also in action at the 2017, 2019, 2022 and 2023 World Championships and he eyes another slot, Julius Yego hopes his resilience and hard work will be an inspiration to the young talent.
