Brigid Kosgei has seven siblings and was raised by a single mother, who struggled to fend for them and could also not afford school fees. Her sister Pamela Kosgei is also an athlete.

This forced Kosgei to drop out of High School in January 2012, in her final year, after she had accumulated school fees arrears of over $1,500 (Ksh150,000 at the time) that her mother could not raise.

Brigid Kosgei’s Career

Brigid Kosgei has won two London Marathon titles.

Having dropped out of school at 17, Brigid Kosgei decided to just focus on athletics as she felt it was the only way that could get her family out of poverty.

Unlike many athletes who start on track, she felt the competition was very tough and opted to go straight into marathons and she has reaped the benefits of that decision.

Kosgei started training with her then boyfriend Mathew Kosgei and a year later, took a maternity break, but returned in 2015 and joined a training camp that allowed her to stay far away from distractions.

That allowed Brigid Kosgei to fully focus on her career and that year, won her first marathon in Porto Portugal after clocking 2:47:59.

Since then, Kosgei has never looked back as she won Milano and Honolulu marathons while coming second in Lisbon in 2016 and in 2017, her first major marathon in Boston did not go well as she finished eighth.

She, however, finished second in Chicago and defended her title in Honolulu and by 2018, she had come of age, finishing second in London before winning in Chicago, her first victory in a World Major Marathon.

From then, Brigid Kosgei won three straight major marathons, starting 2019 with victory in London before she returned to Chicago and defended her title. She did not just win in Chicago but also broke the world record, clocking 2:14:04, to break Paula Radcliffe’s record that had stood for 16 years by 81 seconds.

Kosgei would return to London and win again in 2020 before winning silver at the delayed 2020 Tokyo Olympics, with her last marathon win being in Tokyo in 2022.

However, after that, Kosgei disappeared from the scene and it later emerged that injuries and some personal issues were behind her absence.

She returned in 2024 and won the Lisbon Half Marathon before finishing fifth in London but missed the Paris Olympics after a late injury, having been part of Team Kenya, with Sharon Lokedi slotted in as a late replacement. She is set to run the 2025 Tokyo Marathon.

Brigid Kosgei’s World Records

On October 13, 2019 Kosgei set a new marathon world record of 2:14:04, an improvement of her personal best by more than 4 minutes, while beating the previous world record by 81 seconds.

That record was broken by Ethiopia’s Tigst Assefa in Berlin in 2023, when she ran 2:11:56, before Kenya’s Ruth Chepng’etich lowered it to 2:09:56 in Chicago in 2024.

At the 2022 Ras Al Khaimah Half Marathon, Kosgei finished second but her time of 1:04:49 was two seconds better than the previous world record, while at the 2024 Abu Dhabi Marathon, she broke the course record in a time of 2:19:15.
