‘Don’t add me to funeral WhatsApp groups if you didn’t stand with me when my mum succumbed to cancer’

Flamboyant lawyer Donald Kipkorir has made a bold and emotional statement, calling out those who, in his words, didn’t look for him during the hardest period of his life – the death of his mother to cancer.

In a tweet posted Thursday night, February 6, 2025, Kipkorir expressed his frustration over being added to funeral WhatsApp groups for the families of those he claims had failed to offer him support during his mother’s lengthy and painful battle with cancer.

“To my friends & foes,” Kipkorir began.

“When my mum suffered from painful & debilitating CANCER for long & which she succumbed to, most of my friends & acquaintances didn’t look for me. Of course my BFFs were there. So, I don’t understand when they lose their kin & distant relatives, they want to add me to Funeral WhatsApp Groups!”

The outspoken lawyer continued, reflecting on how he doesn’t actively seek new friendships or favours, especially after his experience.

“At my age, I don’t seek new friendships or favors. So, if you didn’t call or look for me when I was taking care of & buried my mum, don’t look for me when you lose a kin or friend! I am tired of the invitations. It is life!” Kipkorir wrote.

Mother’s death

Kipkorir’s post comes nearly two years after his mother Katarina died.

The lawyer’s mom passed away in May 2023 after a prolonged battle with cancer.

In a heartfelt message shared on X, Kipkorir announced her passing on May 28, 2023, noting that she had passed the day before, on May 27.

“Yesterday, my Beloved Mama, Katarina rested and is in the bosom of Abraham. My mum fought her aggressive cancer with stoicism, fidelity to God and courage. She never once cried in her searing pain. I thank God for giving her to me. In the heavens, she finds peace and serenity,” Kipkorir wrote at the time.

Earlier in May 2023, Kipkorir had also shared that he was taking his mother to India for medical treatment, expressing his deep devotion to her.

“On my way to India with my mum. The Commandment to honour our parents is the only Commandment with assured Blessings,” he tweeted, underscoring the personal sacrifice he was making in hopes of finding a solution for her ailment.

Kipkorir’s call for empathy and honesty resonates with many who have faced similar challenges, urging people to remember the importance of genuine support during life’s toughest moments.

His post is a poignant reminder of the need for meaningful connections and the deep, sometimes painful, reality of loss.

His words have sparked wide discussion, with many applauding his honesty while others caution about the emotional toll such public declarations can take on relationships.

Nonetheless, Kipkorir’s stance is clear: genuine support should be a two-way street.
