Former Prime Minister and African Union Commission (AUC) chair candidate Raila Odinga has expressed his sorrow over the death of billionaire philanthropist and spiritual leader, Karim Aga Khan.
In a statement shared on his X account on Wednesday, February 5, 2025, Odinga highlighted the impact Aga Khan had on communities worldwide, particularly in Kenya.
“His Highness Prince Mawlana Shah Karim Al-Hussaini Aga Khan IV has exited the world at a time of much uncertainty and anxiety; just when we needed his wisdom, tolerance, empathy, and moral leadership the most. His death is a heavy blow to the community of good deeds, compassionate humanitarianism, and works of faith,” Raila stated.
Odinga emphasized the influence Aga Khan had on Kenya, noting that his investments and humanitarian efforts have greatly benefited the nation.
“As a country, Kenya has benefitted significantly from Aga Khan’s works and investment in human welfare, which will certainly live long since he is gone,” he added.
The former prime minister also extended his sympathies to those mourning Aga Khan’s passing globally.
“Our prayers and thoughts are with the millions around the world who looked up to him for spiritual guidance and physical well-being. I express my deepest condolences to His Highness’s family and the @TheIsmaili community worldwide,” he stated.

President William Ruto also mourned the philanthropist, describing him as a selfless leader who went beyond the impossible to help the less fortunate through his charities.
“We are saddened by the passing of The Aga Khan, the spiritual leader of Ismaili Muslims. He was an extraordinary leader who went beyond what seemed impossible to help the vulnerable — through his charities in hospitals and schools. Our thoughts are with the family of His Highness and the wider Ismaili community. Rest In Peace,” Ruto expressed.
Death and life of Aga Khan
Aga Khan IV, who passed away at the age of 88, was known for his extensive philanthropic work and contributions to human welfare, particularly through the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN).
According to a statement from his charity on social media, he passed away peacefully in Lisbon, Portugal, with his family by his side.
“We offer our condolences to the family of His Highness and to the Ismaili community worldwide,” the Aga Khan Development Network expressed.
Prince Karim Aga Khan, the 49th hereditary imam of the Ismaili Muslims, traces their ancestry directly to the Prophet Muhammad.
Born in Switzerland, Prince Karim held British citizenship and resided in a chateau in France.
The Ismaili Muslim community, a sect within Islam, has an estimated global population of 15 million, with around 500,000 members living in Pakistan. Significant Ismaili populations are also found in India, Afghanistan, and various parts of Africa.
At just 20 years old, Prince Karim Aga Khan took over as imam of the Ismaili Muslims in 1957, succeeding his grandfather.
