Why Kakamega Homeboyz took a chance on struggling goalkeeper

The Abana Abeingo made a bold move by signing Patrick Matasi, betting on his redemption despite recent struggles at Kenya Police FC.

If there is one player who knows the highs and lows of football, it is Patrick Matasi.

The experienced goalkeeper, once a mainstay for both club and country, has endured a challenging period in his career.

After struggling for game time at Kenya Police FC, Matasi has now secured a fresh opportunity, signing a two-year contract with Kakamega Homeboyz.

Kenyan international Timothy Ouma ditched Swedish club Elfsborg for Slavia Prague and here is everything you need to know about the Czech giants.

The former Posta Rangers and Tusker FC shot-stopper had found himself on the periphery at Police, with Burundian coach Etienne Ndayiragije preferring Job Ochieng in goal.

However, despite Matasi’s recent struggles, Homeboyz chairman Cleophas Shimanyula remains confident that the custodian still has plenty to offer.

“We have sealed the signing of Patrick (Matasi) after he agreed to join us on a two-year contract after leaving Police,” Shimanyula told Flashscore.

“We know he has not been performing to his best level at his former club, but again, I always believe that he deserves another chance to play again.”

Billions Kenya will spend on stadiums for AFCON 2027 & CHAN 2024 tournaments

Kenya is preparing a number of stadiums to be used for the CHAN 2024 and 2027 Africa Cup of Nations and it will be a costly affair for the country.

The decision to sign Matasi despite his recent struggles highlights Homeboyz’s belief in redemption and second chances.

The former Posta Rangers goalkeeper has promised to work hard and rediscover his form as the club aims for silverware.

“He has promised to perform to his level best. We know players have those periods when their form is not good enough, so it doesn’t mean you look down upon them. You give them another chance, and that is why I have decided to give Matasi another chance to shine here at Homeboyz,” added Shimanyula.

Furious Manchester United players have made their feelings known over some of the players in the team following their 2-0 loss to Crystal Palace at Old Trafford.

Homeboyz, who have set their sights on winning the FKF Premier League and the domestic cup this season, see Matasi as a key figure in their ambitions.

The club’s chairman revealed that the shot-stopper is their first signing of the current transfer window, with plans to recruit at least four to five additional players.

“Our main target still remains to win the FKF Premier League title and the domestic cup at the end of the season, and Matasi has promised to do his best and help us to reach our goal for the season,” Shimanyula said.

“He is our first signing of the current transfer window, but we are looking at adding at least four to five new players in some specific departments (as per the request of the technical bench) to help us succeed in our mission to win the league and the domestic cup.”

Gor Mahia finally confirm Sinisa Mihic as new head coach

Gor Mahia have confirmed a new head coach with vast international experience aiming to strengthen their dominance in Kenyan football.

Matasi’s dip in form began last year when former Harambee Stars coach Engin Firat overlooked him for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying fixtures against Zimbabwe and Namibia.

Earlier, Firat had also excluded Matasi from the national team squad for the 2024 Africa Nations Championship (CHAN) qualifiers against South Sudan.

Despite Kenya qualifying automatically as co-hosts, they struggled in the qualifiers, losing 2-0 to South Sudan in Juba before drawing 1-1 in the return leg in Nairobi. The Bright Stars won the tie 3-1 on aggregate.
