Mandera – An operation to search for five chiefs from the Wargadud unit continues to be kidnapped by armed men believed to be al-Shabaab militants.
The kidnapping occurred on Monday morning, February 3, before the three -day visit to the President's development William Ruto in the area.
Authorities reported that the militants seized a government car in the Iresuki area while transporting the chiefs to Elwak city for a meeting at Mandera County offices in the south by deputy commissioner Tobias Otunga.
The conference was coordinated as part of the preparations for Ruto's visit to the county and the broad northeast.
William Ruto orders police to investigate the case of kidnapping
Despite the kidnapping, President Ruto's visit continued as planned. Addressing the residents when he arrived, he assured them that the kidnapped chiefs would return home safely and promise strong action against the parties.
“Yesterday the terrorists wanted to bring panic to this area, these chiefs must return home, and we will fight them … I sleep in Mandera, and if necessary, I will continue to sleep in Mandera, ” Ruto said firmly.
He also instructed Deputy Inspector of Police, Gilbert Masengeli who accompanied him on the visit to ensure the five executives return home.
“Masengeli, I told him, from top to bottom, left to right. These things must be resolved,” He ordered.
Who are the captured Mandera chiefs?
The kidnapped chiefs include Mohamed Noor Hache, Mohamed Adawa (Wargadud City), Abdi Hassan (Quramadow), Mohamed Hassan (East Wargadud), and Ibrahim Gabow (Assistant Chief).
Local administrators were reported to be closed before being operated towards the Somali border.
As of yesterday evening, they were unknown where they were, with the security team of many organizations, led by the Kenyan Defense Force (KDF), sent to monitor and rescue kidnapped regulators.
3 Kitengela kidnappers invite the ICC in their case
Despite an increase in kidnapping cases and security concerns in the country, three kidnapped men in Kitengela have appealed to the International Criminal Court (ICC) to intervene in their case.
Bob Njagi, Jamal Longton, and Asman Longton claim their lives have been at stake since they were released in September 2024, claiming they were being followed by suspected police vehicles.
In a letter submitted through the Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC), the three accused the government of planning the loss of people and arbitrary killings to silence its critics.
