CECAFA & COSAFA make ground breaking announcement ahead of FIFA council elections

CECAFA and COSAFA have made a strategic move ahead of FIFA elections in April.

Council for East and Central Africa Football Associations (CECAFA) and the Council of Southern Africa Football Associations (COSAFA) have entered into a formal agreement to back each other’s candidates for the upcoming FIFA Council elections.

In a joint statement seen by Pulse Sports, both councils confirmed their commitment to supporting each other’s candidates ahead of the highly anticipated FIFA Council elections.

This collaboration marks a strategic move aimed at strengthening their representation in FIFA’s highest decision-making body.

CECAFA has nominated Souleiman Hassan Waberi, the President of the Djibouti Football Federation (DFF), as its sole candidate for the FIFA Council.

Meanwhile, COSAFA is backing Andrew Kamanga, the President of the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ), for one of the five FIFA Council positions allocated to CAF members.

This alliance reflects a united front, leveraging the collective voting power of both zones, which together command the support of 25 CAF member associations—14 from COSAFA and 11 from CECAFA.

Both Waberi and Kamanga have been deemed eligible to contest in the elections by FIFA’s Review Committee.

Their candidacy marks a crucial step in ensuring that the two regions maintain a strong voice in the governance of world football.

The FIFA Council serves as the primary decision-making body of FIFA between Congress sessions.

It comprises 37 members, including one President elected by the FIFA Congress, eight vice presidents, and 28 members elected by the respective member associations.

The elections for the FIFA Council candidates will take place during the 49th UEFA Congress, scheduled for April 3, 2025, in Belgrade.

The outcome of these elections will shape the future leadership and decision-making process within FIFA, with CECAFA and COSAFA hoping to enhance their influence through their chosen representatives.
