A 30-year-old artisanal miner died and another one was seriously injured after a mining expedition in Gobei area in Bondo sub-county turned tragic.
According to the Site Manager Philip Chunga, the ill-fated miner who has only been identified as Bernard met his untimely death after the shaft collapsed and caved in.
He told KNA that the deceased was in the company of three other colleagues inside the shaft when it crumbled
Chunga stated that during that incident, other miners who were around that area managed to rescue two of the miners who came out without any injury, while the third one sustained severe injuries and was rushed to Bondo sub-county hospital for treatment.
He stated however that they tried to rescue Bernard in vain since the exercise took a little bit long and he was already dead by the time they reached where he was.
The site Manager regretted that Bernard has died at a wrong time when his entire family depended on him as the sole breadwinner, and therefore impressed upon his fellow miners to be taking precaution to prevent such untimely deaths.
Bondo Sub-County Police Commander Robert Aboki confirmed the incident, noting that the body was removed to Bondo sub-county hospital mortuary to await postmortem examination.
