South Sudan – About 20 people have been confirmed to die following a plane crash in northern South Sudan.
When did the South Sudanese plane crash?
Unity Gatwech State Information Minister Bipal said the 21 -person plane, including Chinese and Indian, crashed on Wednesday, January 29.
Bipal revealed that the aircraft, consisting of oil workers from Greater Pioneer Operating Company, crashed into Unity oil field (a large oil reserve in northern South Sudan) as it headed towards the country's capital, Juba.
According to the Minister of Information, the plane crashed 500 meters from the airport.
Previously, 18 deaths were reported, but two rescuers died later, leaving only one person who survived. The cause of the accident is still unknown.
“The plane crashed and caused the deaths of 19 people including two Chinese and Indian pilots, the plane was carrying oil workers who were traveling on vacation after staying 28 days in their workplaces, reports will follow after further information . From GPOC and Aviation Company, ” Bipal said.
Acting Director of Juba International Airport Saleh Akot confirmed the incident saying the small plane leased by the GPOC crashed shortly after flying from Unity province.
“The plane departed from Unity State this morning and, on the way back to Juba, the plane crashed shortly after the flying. We are still collecting more information,” Akot said, as reported by Tamazuj radio.
