Kenyan content creator and influencer Azziad Nasenya has reemerged on social media after a month-long break, during which she kept a low profile.
Azziad known for her viral ‘Utawezana‘ dance challenge that went viral during the Covid-19 pandemic took to her Instagram stories to address her fans, expressing gratitude for their support and concern.
In her message, Azziad reassured her followers that she was doing well and thanked them for reaching out to check on her. She shared how much she had missed interacting with her audience
“Hi my loves, I hope you are doing great, nilikuwa nimewamiss. Your love has been felt, it has just been overwhelming. Nawapenda sana. To everyone who reached out via texts, and DMs, thank you very much. It’s been long since you heard my voice, nimeona leo niwaongeleshe, you are amazing. I’m well and thank you,” she expressed.
Azziad on mental health
The influencer’s return comes weeks after she opened up about a challenging period in her life, which saw her prioritize her mental health under medical supervision.
In December 2024, Azziad revealed that she had spent three weeks under doctors’ care, taking a break from her phone and social media to focus on her well-being.
“If 2022 almost took you out can I see your hands, my legs would be up as well. These are my leave-out sheets I’m being discharged today. This has been my home for three weeks because I was under doctors’ supervision. I’ve not been on the phone, I was taking care of my mental health. It was bad. It’s been a rollercoaster. I’m here to tell you that it’s normal to take a break and take care of yourself,” she said.
Azziad also reflected on the ups and downs she had experienced, admitting to making financial mistakes, and having high and low moments that prompted her to seek medical care.
“It’s been a crazy year for me. I’ve made mistakes, bad decisions, I’ve made bad financial mistakes, good financial mistakes, wins, and lows. If you need to take a break to work on your mental health, please do that,” she urged her followers.
Suicidal thoughts
In a past interview with Dr Ofweneke, the viral TikToker opened up about battling suicidal thoughts after her sudden rise to fame due to cyberbullying.
“After the video went viral, that did not shock me coz I had done a couple of videos. A lot of people asked me how did you feel. It did not shock me because I had done videos that went viral before on TikTok; it was happening. So to me, I was just like ah, it’s another one,” Azziad shared.
She noted that her newfound fame brought excitement and positive support at the start. However, the excitement was overshadowed by hate and cyberbullying.
“It was all love, and then before you know it, it was boom, came cyberbullying,” she explained.
She mentioned that living alone during the pandemic, the negativity overwhelmed her, pushing her to a dark place. She revealed how close she came to ending her life.
“I went to my balcony, and I was like, um, is this where God you let me go? Yeah, it was that bad,” she recalled.
Adding;
“I had my management there. I had my friends, not here or there, but they were on the phone. The next day in the morning, that was the first thing. They came to me.”
“I’m just a teenager. I was just doing what I love. What do you mean someone is mad because I danced? I did not hurt anyone,” she recounted explaining that she did not understand why she was getting hate for having fun online.
Azziad rose to fame during the COVID-19 lockdown with her dance to the hit song Utawezana by Mejja and Femi One.
