Athletics Kenya outline key condition before international competitions

AK explains what athletes will need to meet in order to be allowed to participate in both local and international competitions.

Athletics Kenya (AK) has encouraged athletes to register with the federation’s database.

AK Director of Youth Development Barnaba Korir said only athletes found on the federation’s database can compete in local and international events.

Kenyan student-athlete Joan Jepng’etich’s body arrived in Nairobi after her tragic death in a US car accident.

Speaking to Citizen Digital, Korir said: “We are implementing a robust registration program for athletes, their support personnel, and training camps.”

Korir, who doubles up as Executive Member, maintained that athletes, coaches, and athlete assistants who are not registered in the database will be barred from participating in any athletics activities. He challenged them to grab the opportunity to beat the registration deadline that will be closed soon.

Inside Athletics Kenya’s plan to secure a clean slate for 2025 World Championships

Athletics Kenya has intensified efforts to address doping and athlete welfare while celebrating the success of its youth development programs.

“The registration of athletes is nearing completion, and the next phase will focus on registering support personnel, such as coaches, before moving on to the camps,” Korir highlighted.

The nationwide registration exercise aims to collect accurate data on athletes and their officials after it was launched in July last year.

“This system will enable us to monitor athletes, track the camps where they are training, and maintain comprehensive records of their activities.

“It will also strengthen our fight against doping. One of the key features of this program is ensuring that every athlete competing in Kenya undergoes registration and at least one anti-doping test before receiving visa letters for international competitions.”

Combating doping and addressing age-cheating problems are some of the things the exercise is expected to meet while enhancing integrity within the sport.
