ICT Cabinet Secretary (CS) William Kabogo has said the government will consider switching off social media if the country’s national security is threatened.
Addressing the press on Tuesday, January 28, 2025, Kabogo who had initially insisted that there are no plans to shut down social media, highlighted the importance of creating a safe environment devoid of divisions on social media.
He assured that while the government has no intention of switching off social media, they will be forced to whenever the country’s security is in jeopardy.
This, according to the CS, is the appropriate move to combat divisive talks that could potentially cause more harm to the country’s peace and stability.
“We have said the first measure is we need to create a good environment within social media. We are not planning to switch off anything, it is not in our mind, the capacity is there in case we have a situation of national security importance,” CS Kabogo said.
He went on to announce plans to propose a bill that creates an online OB reporting for internet misuse to ensure that the cases are immediately dealt with online.
Further, the former governor urged Kenyans to create a conducive environment that accommodates everyone on social media.
“I will move to Parliament so that we have OB reporting online so that we don’t have to go to the police to report, and if they agree, then we should be able to report online for action to be taken,” he added.
