‘I was almost traumatised’- Amos Kipruto reflects on moment he almost quit his athletics career

Amos Kipruto has opened up about a moment in his career that nearly ended his career and his determination to return to the global stage.

Former London Marathon champion Amos Kipruto has opened up about a moment in his life that almost forced him to end his athletics career.

After his victory at the 2022 London Marathon, Amos Kipruto has struggled to make an impact on the global stage, forcing him to think about quitting the sport.

His poor performance stemmed from the series of injuries he had and in 2023, he was in action at the London Marathon again but this time around, failed to finish the race.

It is no doubt that the world knows about Eliud Kipchoge’s prowess on the roads but do you know how many millions his running career has earned him?

Amos Kipruto also competed at the Berlin Marathon later that year where he went on to finish distant seventh as Eliud Kipchoge claimed top honours. In 2024, he bounced back and claimed third place at the Chicago Marathon, sparking hopes of dominance once again.

“I was almost traumatized by the injuries, you know the main monster in athletics is injuries and it gives one a lot of questions, you might even think about quitting. I thank my coach because he was really a great mentor and gave me a lot of hope,” Amos Kipruto said in an interview with CGTN Africa.

Kipruto also expressed gratitude to the Chicago Marathon organisers for allowing him to showcase his talent and race in their 2024 edition of the race as he admitted that he had to put in extra effort.

He is now ready for the events of this season, revealing his interest in competing at the World Championships in Tokyo, Japan.

Kipruto also believes he is ready to compete at the World Marathon Majors and organisers should not deny him an opportunity if he expressed interest.

“I’m ready for any opportunity that comes my way…if the World Championships will be there, I’m ready. If any major marathon will allow me to enter a race, I’m also ready,” he shared.

Jamaican sprint legend Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce will head to the United States to promote her latest venture as she begins to prepare for life beyond track.

“I want to give special thanks to the race organiser of the Chicago Marathon for giving me the chance to go and compete there, that was a huge opportunity and I give him all the respect. I fought for the podium and finished among the top three.”

The Kenyan long-distance ace knows how it feels to don the Kenyan jersey on the global stage since he was in action in the Olympic marathon at the delayed 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games and the 2019 World Championships in Doha, Qatar.

However, Kipruto failed to impress at the Olympic Games as he did not finish the race. At the World Championships, he claimed a bronze medal.
