South Africa, the other 25 countries that support Raila Odinga as chairman of the AUC

The heads of African countries, on February 25, 2025, will meet in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to elect the next chairman of the commission.

The winner, who must be supported by an agreement or at least two -thirds of the 55 African heads, will succeed former Prime Minister Chad Moussa Faki, whose eight -year term ends with a vote.

With his voting search, the former Prime Minister of Kenya has the highest number of countries in his group.

Despite his efforts and opportunities, Raila faces fierce competition from Mohamoud Youssouf of Djibouti and Richard Randriamandrato of Madagascar.

Raila has been working in crossing the main camps to increase his position.

1. EAC

The upcoming AUC chairman is expected from the East African Community (EAC) region.

While Kenya was the first of the same ones in the area, Raila started his campaign there.

The EAC countries that have promised to support Raila are Kenya, Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda.

2. IGAD

Raila went through the area of ​​the Government Authority on Development (IGAD) in December 2024.

IGAD comprises mainly from the Horn of Africa, despite the membership of some EAC countries, ie Uganda and South Sudan.

Aside by members of EACEritrea is the only country from the region that promised to support Raila.

IGAD also has Djibouti as a member; Raila's main opponent, Mahmoud Youssouf, is from Djibouti.

3. SADC

Raila invaded the Southern African Development Community (SADC) since early 2025, passing the countries back.

He visited seven SADC countries in ten days between January 6 and 17.

Raila met with heads of Mauritius, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Botswana, South Africa, Lesotho and Mozambique, who promised their votes.

Zambia, whose president Raila met in September 2024 and succeeded in support, is also a member of the SADC.

Angola is another SADC country where Raila has been assured of votes.

4. ECOWAS

The West African Economic Community (ECOWAS) with 15 members is believed to have a major influence on the continent.

Analysts say that ECOWAS, which largely includes French -speaking countries from West Africa, has a major influence on the African Union.

Raila received support from eight countries of Ecowas; Togo, NigeriaGambia, Senegal, Ghana, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, and Cote d'Ivoire.

5. COMESA

The East and South African Joint Market (COMESA) is one of the largest camps in the country, which brings together 21 countries from East Africa, the Horn of Africa and South Africa.

Ten countries from a total of 21 have pledged to support the Kenyan veteran politician.

Yet ten are divided into EAC (Kenya, Uganda, Burundi, DRC, and Rwanda), SADC (Mauritius, Zimbabwe, and Zambia) and IGAD (Eritrea).

Equatorial Guinea, which is not in line with any camp, is also in the Raila ranks.

He also invaded the North African Union, meeting and seeking support from heads of Tunisia, Algeria and Mauritania.

What vision does Raila have in Africa?

Raila holds that he is the best one to lead the African continent towards his 2063 main agenda.

The producers of the vision listed, among other things, African people's income, decent jobs, healthy citizens and good nutrition, education, sustainable economic growth and participatory, and better housing and potentially living for Africans as priority areas of the previous agenda.

In August 2024, Raila launched his eight -focused agenda plan for the continent's economic change, African trade, financial independence, agricultural change, gender equality and equality, climate measures, continental cooperation and peace and security.

If he wins, Raila will live in the African Union headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
