Pulse Sports takes a look at the all-time scoring greats in FKF Premier League history.
Tusker FC’s free-scoring forward, Ryan Ogam, continues to light up the FKF Premier League with his clinical finishing. The striker netted his 15th goal of the season in a brace against defending champions Gor Mahia, sparking conversations about whether he could break the record of 27 goals scored in a single season.
As Ogam chases history, Pulse Sports take a look at the top five players who have delivered the highest-scoring campaigns in the FKF Premier League (FKFPL) history.
5. Allan Wanga – 23 Goals (Tusker, 2007)
Former Tusker and AFC Leopards striker Allan Wanga made an instant impact in the FKF Premier League during his debut season in 2007. Playing for the Brewers, Wanga notched an impressive 23 league goals, coming close to the all-time record. His lethal finishing and knack for scoring earned him recognition as one of the league’s most prolific forwards.
Ogam has netted 15 league goals in 17 games so far this season, and could be on course to break Simba-linked star Elvis Rupia’s FKFPL goalscoring record set in 2023.
4. Eric Kapaito – 24 Goals (Kariobangi Sharks, 2021)
Eric Kapaito’s sensational form during the 2021 season saw him score 24 goals for Kariobangi Sharks. The forward’s remarkable scoring streak made him a serious contender to break the long-standing record of 26 goals. Although he fell two goals short, his stellar performances earned him a move abroad to Ethiopian side Arbaminch.
3. Maurice ‘Sonyi” Ochieng—26 Goals (Gor Mahia, 1976)
Maurice “Sonyi” Ochieng remains a legendary figure in KPL history. He spearheaded Gor Mahia’s attack in the 1970s, netting an astonishing 26 goals during the 1976 season. Ochieng’s record stood unmatched for decades, solidifying his place as one of the league’s greatest strikers.
Gor Mahia interim coach is aiming to have a record number of players represent the national side during the 2024 CHAN tournament.
2. Benson Omala – 26 Goals (Gor Mahia, 2022/23)
In the 2022/23 season, Benson Omala equaled Maurice “Sonyi” Ochieng’s long-standing record of 26 goals while leading Gor Mahia to their record 20th league title. Despite his impressive tally, Omala narrowly missed out on the golden boot, finishing one goal behind Kenya Police’s Elvis Rupia in a thrilling race for top scorer honors.
1. Elvis Rupia – 27 Goals (Kenya Police FC, 2022/23)
The former Kenya Police striker, who now plays for Tanzania’s Singida Black Stars, dominated the premier league scoring charts during his time with the law enforcers. He scored 27 goals, breaking Maurice ‘Sonyi’ Ochieng’s long-standing record during his golden boot race with Gor Mahia striker Benson Omala. Some, however, dispute this, claiming he scored 26 goals, but both FKF and Kenya Police have reaffirmed the 27-goal tally.
Kenya Police coach Etienne Ndayiragije has remained evasive over the futures of experienced duo Musa Mohammed and Patrick Matasi amid reports they are set to depart this month.
As Ryan Ogam continues his impressive form, fans and pundits alike are keen to see if he can join this illustrious list of goal-scoring greats.
