Ogam has netted 15 league goals in 17 games so far this season, and could be on course to break Simba-linked star Elvis Rupia’s FKFPL goalscoring record set in 2023.
Former Harambee Stars striker Boniface Ambani has expressed his belief that Tusker’s Ryan Ogam has what it takes to rewrite history by breaking the FKF Premier League (FKFPL) goalscoring record of 27 goals, a feat set by former Kenya Police striker Elvis Rupia in 2023.
Rupia’s record-breaking tally eclipsed a 46-year milestone of 26 goals set by former Gor Mahia forward Maurice Ochieng ‘Sonyi’.
However, Ambani himself claims to have scored 26 goals for Tusker in the 2006 season, though official records credit him with 23 goals.
Gameweek 15 of the 2024/2025 FKF Premier League was unforgettable for many reasons. Here are five things we learnt about Kenya’s top flight league action last weekend.
Despite the discrepancies, Ambani’s admiration for Ogam’s form is clear, as he tips the young striker to surpass not just Rupia’s benchmark but also the 26-goal mark achieved by former Gor Mahia forward Benson Omala.
“He is on course,” Ambani told Flashscore. “Striker is all about consistency. That’s what makes a striker. He should keep cool and continue to do what he is doing. As long as his team keeps on assisting him and he avoids unnecessary cards and injuries, anything is possible for him to break the standing record.
“He is an amazing player to watch and very good inside the box. I like him most because he has the nose for goal.”
Ogam has already netted an impressive 15 goals in just 13 FKFPL matches this season, a run that has caught the attention of many, including Ambani.
Five things we have learnt about Harambee Stars at the ongoing Mapinduzi Cup in Pemba Islands as the side continues gearing up towards CHAN 2024.
Reflecting on this achievement, the former Harambee Stars striker, who was the FKFPL top scorer with 20 goals for Tusker in 2006, added: “It’s a good run. Now it’s all about consistency. Records are there to be broken.
“He has what it takes to break the league’s record and even surpass the 30-goal mark. If he remains consistent and disciplined throughout the season, he will definitely make history.”
Ambani emphasised that Ogam’s success will depend not only on his personal discipline but also on the support of his teammates. “He has to believe that he can inspire the club to win the league title. Adding titles to his profile will further cement his legacy,” Ambani noted in a separate interview with SportsBoom.com last December.
Ambani also highlighted Ogam’s potential to become a key figure for the Harambee Stars, particularly in the upcoming CHAN matches.
Harambee Stars interim assistant coach John Kamau is hoping that Kenya can quickly solve their problems upfront ahead of the CHAN 2024 tournament.
“The new Harambee Stars coach will have no choice but to include him in the team and entrust him with the responsibility of getting goals. He has proven that he is the right person to lead the attacking line in CHAN matches,” he stated.
Ambani believes Ogam’s red-hot form could significantly bolster Kenya’s chances at CHAN and other international tournaments. “With consistency, he will also make important contributions in subsequent international assignments,” Ambani concluded.
As Ogam continues to impress in the FKFPL, the spotlight remains firmly on his ability to maintain his current form and achieve the unprecedented. If he stays on track, the striker not only has the chance to shatter records but also to etch his name among Kenya’s football greats.
