‘I need really really good prize money’- Sifan Hassan explains high pay demand for Michael Johnson’s Grand Slam Track

Sifan Hassan has explained why she will need hefty appearance fee and prize money before committing to Michael Johnson’s Grand Slam Track.

Reigning Olympic marathon champion Sifan Hassan has given her major condition before giving Michael Johnson’s Grand Slam Track league a chance.

The track league will debut in Kingston, Jamaica in April 4 to 6 and Sifan has insisted that the appearance fee and prize money should be really high before she commits to racing in one of Slams.

From Jamaica, the meet will move to the Ansin Sports Complex, Miramar, Florida from May 2 to 4, then to the Franklin Field, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania from May 30 to June 1 and then the final leg will be at the Drake Stadium, Westwood, California from June 27 to 29.

Dutch woman Sifan Hassan has disclosed the Kenyan marathoner she fears the most as she disclosed that Faith Kipyegon is destined for more success if she moves to the marathon.

Sifan explained that she will compete over four distances, the 800m, 1500m, 3000m and 5000m and if she won’t be allowed to do that, then she will not race completely.

The 2023 London Marathon champion added that having to travel to the US for the meet and train her mind to train for the 800m and not the marathon requires a lot of strength hence her request for an increase in the amount of money she is to be paid.

The Grand Slam Track league offers $100,000 as the top prize but Sifan believes she needs more than that to make an appearance at one of the events.

“It is great but if you talk to them and they give me very good money, then it’s okay, no problem. As long as they pay very well, you know, because I have to go the US and I have to run the 800m you know, come on I haven’t raced the 800m for a long time, so I have to jump from the marathon,” she said in an interview with Citius Mag.

“So, I need really really good prize money to train my brain. I would do the 3000m and 5000m but it’s not interesting so it’s all four or nothing.”

Meanwhile, Sifan was very impressive last season and her request to compete in four events is not something new. At the Paris Olympic Games, she claimed bronze medals in the 5000m and 10,000m before proceeding to win a gold in the marathon.

She continues to amaze people with her impressive runs and will always be looking to make a name for herself each season.

The 2023 Chicago Marathon champion has since been confirmed for the London Marathon in April where she takes on a very strong field including defending champion Peres Jepchirchir, world record holder Ruth Chepng’etich and Olympic Games silver medallist Tigst Assefa among other formidable women.

However, her goal still stands, she will be looking to win her second title after missing out on the event last year since she opted to compete at the Tokyo Marathon where she finished fourth.
