Nairobi – Mathare 4A was plunged into grief and anger on Monday morning, January 20, following the killing of a middle-aged man by suspected thugs while he was accompanying his three-year-old son to school at around 11:30 am.
The victim, identified as Michael, was a construction worker and is said to have been a single father raising his son alone since the child was three months old.
According to witnesses, Michael was attacked near his home, leaving the little boy crying and helpless next to his father's body.

What happened after Michael was attacked?
Speaking to Mwananchi Digital, a neighbor, Irene, narrated the sad incident after hearing the distress call.
“I immediately recognized the victim as my neighbor. I flashed my light and saw her child crying. The little child looked helpless while the father held his breath. For luck bad, he died before the ambulance arrived,” he said.
At the scene, a lunch box containing food—ugali and omena—was strewn across the dirt road, an ominous symbol of Michael's efforts to care for his son and the uncertainty facing the boy's future.
Felix Popo, a reformed criminal and community leader, decried the growing insecurity in the area.
“There have been cases of people being stabbed to death in this area. Insecurity is widespread, and people live in constant fear. The deceased was an ordinary man who worked in a liner here in Nairobi. This is a sad loss,” he said and asked the local youth to desist from crime.
The incident caused panic among the residents, who temporarily prevented the police from taking the body.
The crowd accused law enforcement of being unable to maintain order, citing recurring insecurity in the area.
Officers from the Muthaiga Police Station finally managed to retrieve the body after a long standoff. It was later taken to the Nairobi Funeral Home.
Residents are calling for urgent action to tackle the insecurity, which they say has left them living in fear and despair.
