This is according to a report released on Tuesday, January 14 by Special Counsel Jack Smith, highlighting how his 2024 re-election protected him from impeachment.

“As outlined in previous and previous indictments, when it became clear that Trump had lost the election and that legal means of contesting the election results had failed, he used a series of criminal efforts to remain in power,” the report said. according to CNN.

Smith's findings, detailed in more than 130 pages, showed alleged actions ranging from pressuring government officials and orchestrating voter fraud to influencing then-Vice President Mike Pence.

It also described Trump's role in the January 6 riots as part of a broader attempt to disrupt the ratification of the election results.

Why Trump's impeachment was stopped

Although Smith's office brought four charges against Trump in 2023, the case suffered a major setback.

The Guardian newspaper explained that the US Supreme Court's decision on presidential immunity in 2024 started the events that led to the removal of charges after Trump's re-election.

In a personal letter, Smith dismissed Trump's claims of acquittal as false, insisting that the decision not to prosecute was tied to constitutional limitations rather than sufficient evidence.

“The (Justice) Department's opinion that the Constitution prohibits the impeachment and prosecution of Mr. Trump while in office is theoretical and does not turn on the seriousness of the crime charged, the strength of the State's evidence, or the validity of the charges, all of which the Bureau fully stands behind. Admissible Evidence was sufficient to secure and sustain guilt in the case,” continued the report.

Trump, on his Community Truth forum, called the report's findings false and hailed his victory as a resounding voter endorsement.

“Jack Smith could not successfully prosecute the Political Opponent of his “boss”, Crooked Joe Biden. Jack is a no-nonsense prosecutor who couldn't get his case before the Election, which I won by a landslide. The voters have spoken,” Trump wrote.

The Trump Organization was found guilty

Elsewhere, the Trump family business was found guilty of tax fraud by a New York court, dealing a blow to the former president.

The Trump Organization and its separate entity, Trump Payroll Corp, were found guilty of all counts, marking the first time the companies have been convicted of crimes.

Trump himself was not indicted, but the fact that the real estate, hotel and golf giant that bears his name is now a convicted felon may tarnish his reputation.
