Kirinyaga – Tension prevailed in Kimanyeki on Sunday, January 12, after residents nearly killed six detectives who allegedly tried to kidnap a local woman, Jackline Gatwiri.
According to Gatwiri, the detectives invited him to town on the pretext of helping to find a suspected robber who is his friend.
When he arrived, he claimed he was forcibly placed inside the car without any clear explanation.
A woman nearby who witnessed the incident raised her voice and made the armed villagers respond, threatening to attack the officers and set their car on fire.
The situation escalated rapidly, and the detectives were only saved through the intervention of officers from the Wanguru Police Station and other local authorities.
What did the DCI say about the alleged attempt to kidnap Kirinyaga?
Following the incident, the Department of Criminal Investigation (DCI) explained that the Kirinyaga Central Police Station sent detectives to arrest the suspect involved in the robbery.
After intervention, the suspect was successfully arrested and taken into custody.
“The criminal investigation officer in the sub-county sent officers to search for the escaped suspect, Jackline Gatwiri, named in Criminal Case No. 278/33/2024 and Court file No. E381. They quickly found him and arrested him in the village,” DCI it said. .
In a statement, the DCI warned the public against preventing police officers from carrying out their constitutional duties, stressing that such actions are a serious crime.
The organization has also warned that helping the escape of a suspect or a prisoner can lead to serious legal consequences.
“The DCI warns the public that obstructing police officers in their constitutional duties is a serious crime, such as trying to assist the escape of a criminal. Furthermore, threatening the life or property of a person cannot be justified and will be dealt with to the fullest extent of the law,” added the statement.
The incident highlights rising tensions and public mistrust due to an increase in alleged kidnapping cases, with communities taking drastic measures.
Furthermore, some Kenyans have decided to take the law into their own hands after the police denied being involved in the kidnapping cases.

Meanwhile, a man who was caught shouting for help trying to escape from the suspected kidnappers was rescued by Kenyans.
The man struggled as one of the alleged kidnappers tried to pull him towards the car.
